| . | i am a 31 yr old female with no family history of breast cancer. onset of period at 11yrs of age and first child at age 30. i felt a little discomfort/pain on my rt. upper part of my breast on sunday morning(4/29/07) morning and saw a bruise and felt a lump under the site. After seeing the surgical oncologist(on 5/1/07) he said on the ultrasound it looks like carcinoma, but he thinks it's a hematoma b/c i told him abt the meds i took for my migraine headaches a few days before (wed - fri)such as tylenol,(motrin 600mg )and zomig. he said b/c the motrin can thin the blood and i might have had a small trama that i might not even known. the bruise, the motrin i took in large doses, and that it just showed up out of no where makes it more likely to be a hematoma. he wants me to come back in 2 weeks for follow up. If then unchanged he said he'll do a biopsy. i am VERY SCARED. i do breast exams off and on, but don't remember feeling anything like this. now i am starting to 2nd guess myself, if i missed something before. i have a week till my appt. the pain has gone away and the site looks more bluish yellow rather than a darker blue like last week, but i still feel the lump. i think its gone down a bit in size but i am not even sure.I AM VERY SCARED.CAN A HEMATOMA LOOK LIKE A CARCINOMA IN ULTRASOUND.??? WHY WOULD HE TELL ME THAT IT LOOKS LIKE A CARCINOMA IF IT WAS A HEMATOMA??? |

| jewls31 | Dear jewls31: An ultrasound is best as distinguishing solid from cystic (fluid filled) structures. It is not diagnostic but it may increase or decrease suspicion. Solid appearing structures with irregular edges increase suspicion and fluid filled structures decrease suspicion but there are also structures that may be in between. A hematoma can occur as a result of any trauma, known or unknown and can feel like a lump and be discolored as you describe. Hematomas will eventually reabsorb but it can take a long time. If your doctor still remains concerned next week, a biopsy will clarify.

| . | Most likely a hematoma. Just follow your surgical oncologists recommendations.
Yes, a hematolma can look like a carcinoma on USG. |
