cycts, and abnormal mammogram

by Carian, Jan 21, 2002 12:00AM
I went for another ultrasound last week. During this ultrasound they say that I had multiple cycts. I am also set up to have another mammogram in six monthes because the radiologist saw some calcifications on my last one. Is there anything I can do so I dont get anymore cycts. This is all in my right breast. My left breast seems to be normal. Can you tell me why I am only getting these cycts in one breast, and not the other? If I have a fiborcyctic breast I would think that I would have this in both breast. I hope you can help me to understand this.

Dear Carian, Without more information to be more specific the answer is regarding cysts in general.  Women who are developing cysts may have higher estrogen levels causing them, if postmenopausal, HRT (hormone replacement therapy) can certainly cause them.  Some comfort measures that women find helpful if there is pain or discomfort associated with the cysts are a supportive bra (to provide support for the ligament that suspend your breasts), application of warm or cold packs, over-the-counter pain relievers – medications that contain ibuprophen, or acetaminophen.  Other suggestions are to avoid caffeine, such as chocolate, cola beverages, tea, coffee.  Read labels on all food products for caffeine content.  Limit salt intake the week prior to the onset of your period.  Avoid hormone-containing foods – eat chicken without added hormones, check labels carefully or talk with your butcher.   Reduce fat, it has been shown to have some effect on cyclical breast pain and hormone levels.

All new lumps should be evaluated to make sure they are indeed cysts.  Regarding your question as to why you are only getting these cysts in one breast and not the other; I could not find information from the sources that I checked that provided a good answer.
