mammogram controversy

.There is now a controversy about the value of mammograms. I had a 1.1 tumor. I had a lumpectory and radiation and am on Tamoxifen. It was discovered on a mammagram although it couldn't be felt. My surgeon was on TV last night defending mammograms, saying that the earlier the diagnosis the better. What is your position?

ningDear ning: The controversy surrounds clinical trials that have not demonstrated survival benefit that could be attributed to mammography. As yet, I don't believe that the National Cancer Institute or the American Cancer Society is ready to abandon the procedure based on this controversy. Until this is sorted out definitively, through prospective research, I think mammography will continue to be recommended and reimbursed as it is today (baseline by age 40, every 1-2 years from age 40-50, and every year after 50).
