11 Month Old Child Doesn't Crawl

by Tomate, Aug 31, 2001 12:00AM
My 11 mos old child does not crawl. You put her on her stomach and within about 10 seconds she starts wining.  I try to encourage her to crawl by moving her arms and legs.  But she resists that.  Sometimes my wife, Lisa, is around when I try to encourage my daughter, Claire, to crawl. Unfortunately, Lisa get irritated when Claire whines about crawling. Lisa will either say "she doesn't like that"  or "She not ready to crawl".  If Claire can't do certain things she get impatient.  Lisa is the same way.  I feel my wife is teaching Claire her impatients.

What can I do? or Do I just wait?

You can't make your child crawl. Development proceeds at its own pace, unless some factor interferes with it. What is your daughter's pediatrician saying about the situation? If she has not been evaluated, she should be, for the purpose of ruling out any medical condition or developmental problem that is interfering with normal progress in motor development.

I've got a friend that never laid her daughter on her stomach to play until she was over 4 months old because she thought you were never supposed to do that. Her daughter didn't end up crawling util around 9 months. I also have a friend who's little girl didn't start crawling til 10 months and then she just got up and walked. There are of course other medical reasons for a child not crawling by 11 months and it's better to be safe than sorry. I would go and see a doctor just to be sure.
