foul smelling navel in infant

I have been wondering if my son's belly button is ok since his umbilical cord stump fell off.  I worried immediately that some of it stayed in his belly button but everyone reassured me that he was fine.  He is now 10-months-old and the doctor says he has a "fishtail" bellybutton--it is an innie but its not open, its more like a line and when it does open, it is bright reddish pink inside.  The doctor said it was fine but this morning I was looking at it and noticed that it smells very foul.  What could be the problem?  Should I be concerned?  I tried to clean it but it still smells.

This is an issue I have no experience with in infants.  The foul smell is a result of bacterial presence in a moist partially closed environment. Topical antibiotics may help. Your pediatrician is your best resource for care.
