Dental treatments (numbing) and pregnancy

by BettyPak, Jul 03, 2005 12:00AM
I am a 33-year-old woman, hwo is planning to have my first baby.

I feel a slight pain at the bottom of a tooth when I pressed it under my lower jaw.  This tooth's blood vessel was extracted (destroyed) and it was covered with a "cast" 9 years ago. {I don't know how to say it in medical terms}. I want to have it treated by the dentist.  If I just leave the tooth untreated until I give birth, would it be harmful to my baby? If I have my dentist treated it, he may have an x-ray test on it or numb it , etc.  How long should I wait after being numbed and taking pain-killer or having an X-ray test for my dental treatment before I can get pregnant?

Your help would be very much appreciated.

All the best

Betty

Betty, I think it behoove you to have the tooth treated before you get pregnant. Most OB doctors prefer that you do not have Xrays in the first trimester. Also if you need local anesthesia they prefer that you do not have epinephrine in the LA. This sometimes makes the treatment a little bit more difficult.Good luck!
