Facial numbness

by nutstarr02, Sep 13, 2005 12:00AM
Earlier today, I went to a new dentist to have 4 cavities filled.  I am totally freaking out now.  The entire left side of my face has been numb for more than 6 hours and has not subsided.  I can feel it on the side of my head as well as right under my eye.  I did get some shots (not sure if it was novocaine or what).  I've never experienced this before - maybe an hour or two of numbness, but nothing like this. My speech is slurred and I can't make any facial expressions - it feels like I have cerebral palsy.  The left side of my face is drooping.

Is this normal?  I thought dental analgesics were meant to numb the sensory portions of the nerve, not motor nerves (especially throughout the entire face/head).  Please help!  Is there anything I can do?

Thanks so much for your help!

I think this numbness will subside if it hasn't already. It is possible that a main branch of the nerve was reached. In all likelihood the numbness will dissipate. If it doesn't within a reasonable amount of time obviously a call to the doctor would be necessary.
