Childs Crown Chipped(front)

by snaggoul tooth, Jan 09, 2007 12:00AM
Hello, You have a GREAT site I LOVE it!!. Lots of info except my twisted incident. My 4 year old has porcelain fronts and metal backing crowns on her front (GRILL) top, and she has chipd one of the front crowns that now shows the metal so basically theirs a chunk of the inner front tooth gone but a back still there. Just think of it as 4 layers and 2 gone.... Still intact but the porcelain chip down a couple layers . Im wondering if its possible to get a composite material to reshape the crown? Ive visited the General Childs dentist and he said there will be a grey area where he puts the composite and it probably wont hold because its synthetic to metal....(smerk) Is this true? and are there any other things that can be done? Poor child has an image.. lol are there any other Dentist that you can refer if this is inaccurate info? Just as any child she’s a doll and cant go around with a snaggle tooth.. Thanks Very much I have an appointment Jan 18/07 and if you could respond gratefully appreciated

Hi, I am glad you are getting some information from the site.I am not a pedodontist so i have never heard of a four year old having PFMs on deciduous teeth. It is a fact that it is difficult to repair a PFM(porcelain fused to metal) with a composite but it can be done with a ceramic etch--it doesn't look that great but it is better than having that black  showing when your child smiles.

everytime I've tried to repair porcelain on a porcelain fused to metal crown it has not worked. I also have never heard of a four year old child with porcelain/metal crowns. It may be possible to cut them off and make new ones, provided the teeth underneath are in good shape. These teeth should be falling out soon anyway, though.

I  too have never heard of a 4 year old with pfms. it can be repaired ,but no guarantee it will hold. poor kid, they have had enough of dental treatment at this young age. let them try to repair it, but know it might not hold very long.

Thanks for the replys, and Ive found some Cosmetic Dental Artist I should say in Sacramento California and theyve dealt with this and are VERY, lol . .... sure they can fix it. Thank goodnees, wouldnt want her to go thru more procedures. Its Horrific watching a child screaming even with meds on the table. The reason why they did a porcelain to metal they say is its stronger for a child/toddler stage . Crowns are  stronger. Now thats what they say ( shrug shoulders ) Who khows. Except for the makers.. is all I could come to. Well THANKS SO Much for the Replys

No child should be screaming on the chair.  If extensive dental work is needed and the child is out of control with pain/fear even with meds, the correct course would be to do the work in an outpatient surgery center under sedation/general anesthesia if needed.
