My Mother's Mole -Part II

by Tatjana, Dec 07, 2005 12:00AM
Dear Dr. Rockoff, this is an update to my previous post (http://www.medhelp.org/forums/dermatology/messages/34037.html). My mother had dermoscopy yesterday, and now I am even more confused than before.  The doctor said that "the mass is benign but there are some visible changes in the mole" he showed her on the screen, the center of the mole had streaks of gray, my mom said it looked quite ugly.  He said the mole should be taken off as soon as possible and sent for histopathological analysis.

While I want to take this doctor's word that the mass is benign, the part where he mentions "changes" are confusing.  Therefore my questions to you are: 1) How can a mole be benign and have changes at the same time? 2) How dependent is dermoscopy without histological findings in determining the nature of the tissue?

Thank you.

Moles change all the time.  Most changes are not cancerous changes.

Dermoscopy is nice, but biopsy  and pathologic analysis remain the "gold standard."  I have every expectation that when the spot is removed, the pathology will be just fine, and any changes will be shown to be from irritation only.

Not to worry.
