Hello.  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes.  Your brother sounds like more of a type 2 candidate than type 1.  Considering family history and the change in health, I think you are right to be concerned.

For many people, there are two primary reasons for not going to the doctor.  First is not being able to afford it, and you don't mention that as an issue.  The second is psychological.  People don't want to hear what the doctor might tell them.  It's easier to just keep doing what you're doing than it is to take care of yourself properly.  Your brother likely has several issues which should get him to the doctor, and at the age he is, he's likely to also not understand the future consequences of his actions because he thinks he's indestructable.  It's a common attitude among teens.  Is there anyone from his dad's side of the family who could talk to him and explain the dangers?

15 is such a hard age-Rl had some good advice.  I would try to get him to the podiatrist too-they can help with the toes and I am sure would let him know he needs to go to the doctor and get some blood work done to find out if he is diabetic.  Untreated issues lead to other complications.

Good for you! If he has not had a checkup, he should. Untreated infection in the feet or anywhere else can lead to bloodstream infections which can be very serious at any age. We wish you the best in getting him to the doctor.
