Blood sugar goes low at Bedtime.

Hello.  I have been noticing that after dinner my blood sugar is fine, but at bed time it is around 100, so I usually dring a glass of fat free milk and a small snack before going to bed, but what if I don't eat before bed, would my blood sugar drop too low in my sleep.  Any information would be greatful.  Thank You.

Well, it depends on what your blood sugar is running in the mornings. If your blood sugar is at 100 at bedtime, and after eating your snack you find it is still at 100 in the mornings, then it is clear that you need this snack for perfect insulin-to-carb balance. If you find that your blood sugar is too high in the mornings, then your snack may not be necessary... or maybe you need a few less carbs in the snack. But if your glucose levels are running too high in the mornings as a rule, you shouldn't just opt to skip the snack altogether, but should just shrink it a little bit and wait a few days to see how this works. Continue to shrink the snack a little bit every couple of days until perfect balance is found.

Never do anything in adjusting food or insulin in large amounts. Very slight changes can make a big difference.

So we can't tell you what would happen if you didn't eat before bed. It really depends on what your current balance is and how much insulin is working after you go to bed. The only way you can tell how much of a snack you need or if you need a snack is by seeing what your first morning glucose tests are running. If really worried about it, you can try testing once in the middle of the night for a few nights to check to see what's happening after you go to sleep. Your level of 100 at bedtime is actually in the perfect range, not low. But if insulin is still working after that night-time test, you may indeed need a snack to prevent night lows.

when my blood sugar goes low lets say 67 how do i know how much sugar to take to get it back up without going over board?
