Diabetic for 13 years Numbness in right hand

by bmwpug, Apr 13, 2005 12:00AM
I am a 24 year old diabetic and have been for about 14 years now. For the past 3 days I have had tingling and numbness in my left hand some on the arm but mostly on hand. Is this a result of diabetic complications or something different. My doctor perscribed me 10 mg flexril and 400 mg of lodine for some muscle pain I have had in my left temple on my right side for tension headaches about a day ago (side eff?). Please advise thanks

I am not a physician, but your symptoms do not sound like diabetic nerve damage to me. For one thing, most people who complain of symptoms of neuropathy complain first of discomfort in the feet, for the feet are farther away from the heart and the blood vessels there are more likely to be damaged by high glucose since they are farther away from the main pump. Also, when diabetics complain to us about neuropathy, they do not complain of only having symptoms on one side. If damage is severe enough for fairly strong symptoms on one side, then there would probably also be damage to the other side and similar symptoms happening there, even if not as strong.

However, your symptoms could be symptoms of nerve damage from a pinched nerve, or certainly from side effects of some medications, although I am not qualified to say whether the meds you are now taking have this kind of possible side effect or not. Even as young as you are, there is also a remote possibility of a heart problem, which could cause these symptoms. So here is my advice:

I would not wait to see what happens, but would call my doctor tomorrow and tell him about your symptoms. if caused by medications, he can change you to something different that won't cause this. It is posible also that the muscle pain and tension headaches is related to the symptoms in your left hand, and telling your doctor about these added symptoms may help him pinpoint the cause of the original tension headaches. So do call him and discuss what you are feeling. I wish you the very best.

Hey to you...I'm not a doctor, just a type 1, 23 years. Another idea: I have carpal tunnel syndrome, a repetitive stress injury from typing, writing, playing violin. I wake up with numbness in my hands, which will fade away eventually with some specific stretches. Also, I used to have a splint, but I lost the thing...sigh. Question: are you right-handed? Is there a certain job that you do such as writing with that hand only, or are you in a profession where you use that hand often? As I understand it, the cause is swelling of a ligament/tendon (not sure on terminology) which squeezes the nerve that passes through your wrist. Hope you are faring well, and try not to worry.
