by KIMBERLYCARMAN, Oct 16, 2005 12:00AM
MY 3 YEAR OLD IS HAVING SO MANY ISSUES LATELY, AND WITH A STRONG DIABETIC BACKGROUND FOR BOTH MY HUSBAND AND MY FAMILY WERE CONCERNED THAT WE SHOULD MAYBE HAVE HER CHECK BY A DOCTOR.  SHE IS CONSTENTLY THIRSTY...I MEAN WOULD DRINK 24/7 IF WE LET HER, SHE'S NOT OVERWEIGHT BUT VERY SOLID, SHE DOSENT SLEEP VERY WELL WHEN SHE DOES SLEEP, AND IS EXTREMELY IRRITABLE...WHICH IS PROBABL FROM NOT SLEEPING WELL BUT STILL SOMETHING I WORRY ABOUT.

ANY SYMPTONS I SHOULD WORRY ABOUT IMMEDIATLY?  ANY ADVISE/INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

See below for information to amplify BL's Answer.

If you find out that your little one does have diabetes, please contact your local branch/chapter of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).  JDRF was formed in the 1970s by parents of children with Type 1.  They not only fund the research that has led to lifesaving and life-enhancing advances in our treatments, but they also have terrific family outreach & support for newly diagnosed and othes who struggle with the stresses & challenges of living a full rich life with diabetes.  http://www.jdrf.org

Warning Signs of Type 1 Diabetes (these may occur suddenly)

Extreme thirst

Frequent urination

Sudden vision changes

Sugar in urine

Fruity, sweet, or wine-like odor on breath

Increased appetite

Sudden weight loss

Drowsiness, lethargy

Heavy, labored breathing

Stupor, unconsciousness

Education about the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes is critical because Type 1 can easily be mistaken for more common illnesses, such as the flu. JDRF has literature which lists the symptoms and treatments of Type 1 diabetes and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)—available upon request. ... [visit website for full story]

Good luck.  It's great that you're alert to these symptoms.

Dear Kimberly,

We are not physicians here and cannot give you medical advice. I can share my personal experience and agree with bl. Excessive thirst and irritability are two of the symptoms of type 1 diabetes. Others are fatique, increased urination and increased hunger. I would advise you to not wait another day. It is a simple blood test and hopefully it will be normal, but if she has diabetes she needs medical help immediately. I am not trying to alarm you, but it is better to error on the side of caution.

Please let us know what you find out and if we can help in any way.
