Glucose question

by peppergirl, Apr 12, 2006 12:00AM
I recently did a glucose fasting test. The test states that normal is 70 - 100 mmg/dL. My result is 128. The test also found that I have a "slight" bladder infection that I was prescribed an antibotic for. It must be slight, as I have no discomfort at all. I am taking the antibotic now. My question is: could the infection effect the number 128? How do I lower the glucose number? what foods effect glucose? thanks

When people are ill, they produce some stress hormones, and these hormones can cause glucose levels to rise a little. That might explain your very SLIGHTLY elevated fasting number. The medicines might also cause an elevated number. In my humble opinion, your number is really pretty normal (the range that has been quoted to me as normal for a fasting glucose test is slightly different from the one you gave... the numbers my endocrinologist uses are 70-126).

I agree with SGG.  You might consider getting tested again once your infection and your medication are out of your system.  Then you'll know your baseline and can be aware of any changes in the results of your annual physical.
