Calculating IOL power?

by Mike80218, Aug 24, 2006 12:00AM
I have nystagmus and an very Myopic (-15 contacts) would a iolmaster measurement work for me?

I wear RGP contacts would I need to stop wearing these for a given amount of time to get a good reading via iolmaster or an a-scan?

I'm now 20/70 could I expect any improvement from a Clear lens extraction (CLE)?

Thanks

if you are BEST CORRECTED 20/70, meaning that even with the best RGP Rx on you have 20/70 acuity, then NO...no lens implant is going to improve your acuity to be better than 20/70.

taking a measurement with an iolmaster is going to be very difficult, possibly impossible.  but yes, it is recommended that you remove the contacts for 30 days before the measurement if you're going to have it done.  i kind of doubt it will work well in a nystagmus case, however.

Hi Mike

I have no experience with your condition, however two months ago I had IOLs implanted and prior was a -16 in  both eyes.  I was measured on the IOL master and was told that it would be very difficult to get an accurate reading at such a high power.  I went for a single vision lens (need glasses for reading) and they were very accurate - I was last week measured at a -.25.  I only need glasses for very slight tweaking in the evenings (driving and sometimes tv) when my eyes are tired.  Waking up and being able to see the alarm clock beside me is something I am still getting used to.  Good luck !

mike:

muppet doesnt have nystagmus.  his and your symptoms and visual experience are totally different.

if you have longstanding nystagmus, it is unlikely (probably impossible) that any procudure/lens/product of any kind will make you better than 20/70.

Check out visianinfo.com.  These are ICL lens that fit behind your iris (color part of eye) and in front of your own lens.  That’s the lens Muppet most likely has.  You can go under general or what’s called RB block to neutralize your nystagmus.  Docs have been getting great results from this lens.

No, I did have cataracts and had them removed and single lens IOLs implanted.  I don't know anything about the other condition so was just trying to offer some positive words.
