completely reattached retina BUT still blind in that eye

by retinaworrygirl, Mar 07, 2007 12:00AM
Twenty-five years ago i had detached my retina in my left eye due to a sporting injury.  I went to the hospital and they patched me up and sent me home.  I was just a teenager then, so i didn't react as i am sure i would now.  I am not totally certain how much time went by, a week, maybe more when my dad was told by friends that i needed to be seen by a specialist immediately.  I had surgery and the doctor told me he was sorry he couldn't save my eye.  Three years ago my right eye retina detached - this time a wonderful surgeon was able to save this eye, i also did not wait to go to the doctor!  I had an ultrasound on the LEFT eye the other day, for the heck of it and the doctor tells me i don't know why you can't see out of your left eye, it is fully attached.  My question is:  How can this be?  Could it have been detached for so long that the blood supply was cut off?  It does have a buckle.    Could the optic nerve have been damaged?  Could there be too much scar tissue? Any help is greatly appreciated.  Please know i am not looking for information for any type of lawsuit..i would just like closure as the doctor is so vague.
