Eye LIDS itching and swelling - now face swelling

by kini05, Dec 01, 2005 12:00AM
On Monday, my lower eyelids begain to itch. My eyes themselves felt fine - only the lids itched. By the next day, my lower lids were a little red and a bit swollen. Itchy feeling was still there and more prominent about 1/4 inch BELOW the eyes. My top lids look pretty normal and the whites of my eyes are still white - no yellowing and no redness at all.

Tuesday night I used an allergy eye drop and took benedryl before bed. This morning both lids look and feel worse and STILL itch. Wednesday (yesterday), I used a couple drops of colloidal silver in each eye in the afternoon and again before bed (to kill the apparent infection) as well as cold compresses to keep swelling down.  my eye lids STILL itched during the night and this morning the swelling is now on my top eyelids and the swelling of the lower lids has spread slightly visibly to my cheekbones - looks a bit puffy - My eyes are NOT swollen shut, nor are they weepy or crusty. I can also feel the swelling down toward my lips a bit - though it is not visibly noticeable.

The only think I can think of is maybe an allergic reaction to detergent or fabric softner on the washclothes I used to wash my face while visiting out of town last weekend (itchiness first appeared on Monday). But it doesn't make sense to me that this could be continuing/getting worse now that I've been away from the source since Sunday. Any ideas of WHAT else could be causing this?

You're right, its most likely an allergic response.  It is most likely NOT an infection of any kind.

Taking benadryl is a great idea, as are cold compresses.  Try very hard NOT to rub or scratch your eyes or face at all.  Use a prescribed topical anti-inflammatory eyedrop, not visine or "ocular decongestants" that contain naphazoline or phenylephrine, etc.

If it gets bad enough you might need an exam and prescribed ocular steroids.

Thank you!  Is it normal for the swelling, and itching to continue and worsen after being away from the source of the allergic reaction since Sunday?

Or do you think the allergen could be something I'm STILL being exposed to somehow?
