Retinitus Pigmentosa.

OK....MY MOTHER HAS RETINITUS PIGMENTOSA WHICH IS (OFCOURSE) MAKING HER BLIND. SHE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO (PEREPHERAL**?) VISION. SHE IS ONLY ABLE TO SEE THINGS THAT ARE DEAD IN FRONT OF HER, AND BY THEN, IT IS ALMOST TOO LATE. IM SCARED FOR HER EVERY TIME SHE DRIVES TO MORK OR EVEN DRIVES AT ALL. ILL STOP BORING YOU NOW, AND JUST GET RIGHT TO IT. ^_^
I NEED TO KNOW IF A RETINAL TRANSPLANT IS ACTUALLY POSSIBLE FOR THE YEAR OF 06. MY MOTHER REFUSES TO SEE HER EYE DOCTOR BECAUSE HER DRIVERS LISCENCE WILL BE TAKEN AWAY, AND IF WORD GETS OUT AT WORK THAT SHE IS ALMOST COMPLETELY BLIND, SHE WILL SURELY LOSE HER JOB AS WELL.
SHE LOVES HER PLANTS. WE WORKED FOR YEARS CREATING FLOWER GARDENS ALL OVER OUR YARD. I WON'T BE ABLE TO BEAR THE DAY THAT SHE CAN NO LONGER SEE THEM.
IF A RETINAL TRANSPLANT IS NOT POSSIBLE NOW, THEN WILL IT BE SOON? ......OR MAYBE FULL EYE TRANSPLANT?
IF THERE IS ANYTHING AT ALL THAT YOU CAN TELL ME, THEN PLEASE BE MY GUEST. EVEN A WORD OF PERSONAL ADVICE WOULD DO ME SOME GOOD RIGHT NOW. THAT IT MOST CERTAINLY WOULD.

                                           SINCERELY,
                                            AMANDA

My husband has had Retinitus Pigmentosa for approximately 15 years.  He wants to continue to drive and will not change eye doctors for the same reason as your mother.  I have been urging him to go to the eye clinic in Boston...to no avail.  He is restricted to driving within 10 miles of our home and no night driving.  I don't think he should be driving at all...and am very scared when he does drive.  What kind of liaibility would the eye doctor have if an accident were to occur???  To make matters worse he is also a diabetic and I think that has started to affect his vision as well.  You have my sympathies, but I am not sure what the answer is.

Im so sorry to hear about your mother - i also suffer with RP and am in my early 40's having had a career as an air stewardess until my condition was diagnosed.  Please urge your mother to stop driving before she has an accident and injures herself or someone else - pedestrians and people on bikes will not be in her line of vision - PLEASE PLEASE stop her driving as soon as possible- i know how hard it will be I had to change my whole life too. kazzy

I'm so sorry about your mom's condition. I can't offer any advice optically speaking, but considering your shared pleasure in gardening, I wonder if you might think about starting to develop an aroma garden together. Not sure if that's the correct name, but I mean a garden where the plants are chosen for their beautiful scents rather than their blooms.

Jobwise, if you can persuade your mother to start facing her future situation, there should be places where she can get low-cost retraining for jobs that she could do with little or no vision (the local association for the blind, or a group such as Lighthouse). Best of luck.

no retinal or eye transplant any time soon.  sorry!

my advice: find an eye doctor who is a "low vision" specialist.  you may have to go to a major metro area to find one...
