muscles in eye problem

by prettyprettypenny, Mar 19, 2006 12:00AM
I had about 4 years ago a problem with my left eye . I went through all kinds of tests , to rule out occular tumors etc...

had mri's done of my orbits and skull. the dr. then came back and said that the problem was that my left eye was turned to the corner of my nose(crooked) because he thought I had something called 6th nerve palsy? but wasn't sure from the tone he gave me He then proceeded to give me my reg.glasses and put a prism in to correct the vision, now some years later I am having problems once again with that eye . Went to my eye care dr. told me that I have a muscle problem in that eye. he told me that when I look at things I look past it then my eye bounces back and puts things in vocus again . Am I going to have the problems I did before? could the 6th nerve palsy be comming back or did it ever go away? I suffer from migraines something firece will this problem be solved? I do wear bi-focals  will I need surgrey to fix it? please help me get some answers! thanks Mrs. Penny Kauffman

surgery for an "eye turn" in a person over 40 is improbable.  so no, i doubt anyone will recommend surgery.

sounds like you either have a decompensated phoria, or that same old 6th nerve palsy.  you may have continuous "trouble" with your eyes and eye muscles...this is a difficult problem to fix.

prisms might be your best bet.  tough to predict your prognosis...

Actually surgery in a person of your age for eye muscle imbalance that is due to a nerve palsy would be helful, as long as you are stable and have been for a while.  Any reputable Strabismologist could straighten the eye using an adjustable suture technique.  This could do away with the need for the prism in your glasses.  Find a Pediatric ophthalmologist that also takes care of adults, and have an evaluation.  I hope it works for you.  Lu An, COT
