.Hi,
I have a grandchild that will be 4 in July. He has never had a lazy eye but now in the last few months one of his eyes are turning in. It concerns me as I was a nurse for years and of course I always think the worse. He has been tested for lazy eye and the test was negative he is going to an opthamologist sometime this month. What can it be?

sulamyacovACCOMMODATIVE ESOTROPIA.

he's most likely farsighted. i mean i obviously cannot diagnose that over the internet w/o seeing him, but that is the **CLASSIC** presentation of accommodative esotropia/farsightedness. he will most likely be Rx'd full-time-wear glasses.

i see these cases all day long in my pediatric practice, and i see them misdiagnosed & mismanaged all the time by health care professionals.

here's what happens in most significantly farsighted kids:

1) they "pass" all of their vision screens with 20/20 vision until age 3 or 4

2) they never complain about headaches or bad vision

3) then one day at age 3 or 4 they look up at you and one eye is turned "in" all of the sudden

again not having seen your grandson...by far the most likely scenario is that he needs glasses (not strabismus surgery) for HYPEROPIA or "farsightedness". this is not a tumor or an aneurysm or anything serious or stressful or emergent. he does not need a "pediatric ophthalmologist"...pretty much any eye doc who sees kids routinely can do this.

good luck! hope you're not opposed to seeing your grandson in glasses from now on (if you are you could always have a pediatric contact lens fit...)

.Thanks...that is what I needed to hear. I of course was in the brain tumor range of thinking. Hospital nursing you only see worse case scenarios. I am sure it is as simple as that and he will look as cute as can be in glasses...if we can convince him to keep them on.
