Miscarriage, D and C and HCG Levels

by TOOTSIE1, Aug 22, 2007 12:00AM
Hi

I had a miscarraige on july 17th at 61/2 weeks pg. i had been recieving fetility treatment, clomid 50mg and IUI, 3rd cycle successful. i had a d and c on the 18th. the following 2 weeks i still felt pg and unwell went to clinic for hcg levels, came back at 23,000! HAD A SCAN AND BABY STILL THERE!! don't know how? needed second d and c had this aug 3rd. products sent to lab. levels then started to come down but slowly 3 days after 2nd d and c 6th aug 12,000, 10th aug 10,8000, 14th aug 7,200 and 23rd aug 3,800. doc thought it was a partial molar preg but lab results came back 1 week ago and they say not. got to get my levels taken for next 4 weeks every week then see doc again. is this normal for things to take this long? had a another scan on monday and still some products left to get rid of, i started spotting at weekend and have been bleeding since monday is this ok? is what has happened to me common/ normal?
thanks

As long as your HCG levels are declining, you are headed in the right direction. Retained products, as this is called, is not uncommon. Did you have a hysterosalpingogram before starting clomid? If not, it would be a good idea to get one once your HCG levels come back to normal, since one in awhile the reason for missing products of conception after a miscarriage is due to an anatomical abnormality in the uterus.

I don't have any answers for you, but I just wanted to say that all of this sounds terrible to go through...Best wishes to you!

I feel so bad for you.  I had a partial molar pregnancy and it took forever for those levels to come down (I was almost 18 weeks along).  Hang in there and keep all of us posted.  Even though your lab came back okay (no molar), it would seem it does take a while for the HCG to come down.

I had a second ultrasound at 8+ weeks, and showed no heartbeat, but they did not do a D&C. In fact, the doctor said, "You'll just get your period." (I like her a lot by the way, but in this instance could have used some more info). I ended up waiting for levels to go down on their own. It took more than a week/ten days for the situation to start to "resolve." I didn't know you could have full-blown labor pains! (Ouch, ouch, ouch). I ended up in the hospital begging for drugs. As for levels I was still having them checked three - four weeks later.

I can't say anything about the faulty D & C results - that sounds horrible. To have to go through that to begin with....my heart goes out to you. I can say, having had to wait a week/ten days for it to resolve on it's own while I was huge from the fertility drugs and still felt really pregnant - I would definitely do the D & C if I was ever faced with it in the future. Let's hope NONE of us do face it again! Good luck and wishes as you forage forward - take care.

I was pregnant with my first child and had a miscarriage at almost 7 weeks on June 13.  I had to get a d and c done on July 19th.  I didn't really bleed much after that.  About 2 weeks later I spotted for 4 days and then about a week after that I started what I think is my period and have now been bleeding for 16 days.  Not a lot of cramping, but I feel tired most of the time.  I'm not sure if this is normal or not.  I don't know how long you bleed or if this is my actual period.  I would like to try and get pregnant again.  I'm not sure when I should try or what to do.

First time on here.... I go in for a D&C tomorrow & although I'm ok (emotionally & physically) right now I know tomorrow will be hard. I went in today to have the "seaweed sticks" put in & that wasn't painful except very mild cramping. I'm not looking forward to the surgery & I have nobody to talk to right now (husband is at work, plus he doesn't know what to say). I went in for my 1st u/s on Sept. 13th & although my Dr. thought I would be 7 weeks, the u/s showed different. I either miscalculated my last period or I had a miscarriage. He gave me a pamphlet on Early Pregnancy Loss "just in case." Had my blood taken that day & then 2 days later to check my HCG levels & they called me that Monday to come to the Dr. the next day. I sort of knew then because wouldn't they atleast give me enough notice to take off work? Well, here I am on this site looking for stories like mine so I don't feel so alone. My Dr. said I only had to wait 2 weeks before trying again. He said, "we used to say wait 3 months, but we don't know why. You're fine after 2 weeks." Of course this depends how the surgery went. Sorry this is so long, but it feels good to talk about it. Wish me well tomorrow. Good night.
