This forum is limited to prevention of HIV and to safe sex in general. If you believe you might have been exposed to HIV and want help to judge your risk, would like advice about HIV testing, or have questions about the effectiveness of condoms or the risks associated with specific sexual practices, this is the site for you.

IMPORTANT

No questions will be accepted on the treatment of HIV/AIDS or its complications, viral load, and similar topics. If you have questions about a specific STD other than HIV/AIDS, please visit the STD Forum. Questions that do not pertain to the above topics will be removed from the forum.

If you have not done so, please review other threads in our archives for questions similar to yours and Dr. Handsfield's replies. Questions that duplicate other frequent ones, for which abundant replies exist, and that have little educational value for other forum users, will be DELETED WITHOUT RESPONSE. YOUR PAYMENT WILL NOT BE REFUNDED. The most common examples of such questions are those about low risk exposures to HIV, such as oral sex, condom- protected intercourse hand-to-genital exposure, and nonsexual contact with possibly infected blood or body fluids as well as symptoms of early HIV infection.

Test follow up

A few questions regarding test results and medication.  Similar story to most, was in a strip club went to VIP things progressed and I had intercourse with a dancer.  After I finished (5min.) I realized the condom fell off.  Not sure when, I was having a hard time keeping an erection so it could have been anytime.  I was tested 48 hours after the possible exposure for everything HIv-pcr, syphilis, hepatitis B, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes 1/2.  I then realized this was a waste of time b/c of the time after exposure I was tested.  I was then tested 16 days after exposure for Elisa Antibodies and RNA/PCR.

I just got those results and they are both negative.  Here are my questions.

1. I have read mixed reviews about RNA/PCR, is a negative result at 16 days a good sign?

2. Can an Elisa test have any accuracy at 16 days?

3.. Since I was nervous about other STD's I took a Z-Pak zithromaz (500mg per pill for 3 days).  Would that have killed syphilis, Chlamydia, and gonorrhea?

4.  Since it's been 29 days with not signs should i be ok with most std's? warts, herpes, etc?

Thanks for your help and support

You have been seriously overtested for HIV.  The proper approach would have been a single antibody test 6-8 weeks after exposure.  But your test results nevertheless are reassuring.

1) Yes, a negative PCR at 16 days is strong evidence you weren't infected with HIV.

2) Probably somewhere around 30-50% of infected people will have positive ELISA results at 16 days, so that result also is somewhat reassuring.

3) Azithromycin Z-Pak would definitely abort chlamydia, and probably gonorrhea and syphilis.

4) No guarantees about HPV/warts.  You can forget about the other infections.

Good luck-- HHH, MD

when you said forgetting about other infections did you mean herpes?  Would i have shown signs of herpes by now?

As far as worts do you typically show signs by 30days?

thanks

The risk of herpes from any particular sexual exposure is very low.  If you had it, you probably would have noticed symptoms by now, but many cases are asymptomatic--but the chances are too low for you to worry about.

Warts sometimes appear within a month but typically take 6-12 weeks to appear, sometimes longer.

Doc, I’m almost at six weeks post exposure and I’m going to get my antibodies test.  My question is should I get tested for Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes.  As you can see on the above post I did take a z-pak as a precaution.  I have had no signs but I want to make sure I don’t pass anything along to my partner.  Also if I had gotten HPV and have no visible warts can I still pass it along to my partner where she would show warts?

In my original reply I said "Azithromycin Z-Pak would definitely abort chlamydia, and probably gonorrhea and syphilis."  That means there is no point in testing:  whether or not you were infected, at this time the results will be negative.

If you caught HPV, with or without warts, you can transmit it to your partner.  You are over-concerned about HPV.  Go do some reading and other research about how little there is to worry about.  Just let it go.

I won't have any further comments.
