Dear Doctor,
I am extremely worried. I am married and about 6 months ago I after a party I ended up in bed with another man. There was no anal sex but was mutual masturbation and I performed oral sex on him very briefly for approx 15-20 secs. This man was a complete stranger. There was no ejaculation in my mouth either. I have not felt unusually unwell in the last 6 months either. A month later after the oral sex my wife falls pregnant (which we discover a few weeks later). She had an HIV test and syphylis test as most pregnat women do at approx 10 weeks post conception which was negative.
Does this test taken at 10 weeks from my wife mean that I and my wife are HIV and syphylis free?
Should I take an HIV and syphylis test now? Or can I rely on my wifes negative test. I am so worried especially as my wife is pregant. I dont know what to do.

Relax. With neither anal sex nor oral sex with ejaculation, the risk of HIV transmission was zero, for practical purposes; and the chance of syphilis was almost as low. You really don't need testing at all, and neither did your wife--presumably her tests were routine because she is pregnant. Anyway, if you want to lower your anxiety still further, get tested yourself. Ten weeks is plenty of time for both HIV and syphilis testing. You can be certain the results will be negative.
