re test

i am a male who in 9/2/06 i got intoxicated and had a sexual experience with a woman i do not now, prior to that had not been sexually active.
i got tested with rapid test 20 minutes 9/13/06 and came up neg.

2 days later 9/15/06 had frequent urination--went to urologist 9/20 and gave me doxyxcline for 10 days. did test for chlamydia and gon came up neg..
after 10 days of meds freq. urination came back-doc told me to comtinue doxy for 1 month. after couple days 10/05/06 got white rash in left cheek and mouth lasting a few days- than two days later some pain in esophagus.

by late 10/06 stopped doxy cause freq urination stopped. in 11/09/06 woke up with pain in my neck secondary to swollen painful with movement lymph nodes L>R side, min pain @ groin secondary to lymph nodes  and severe left midback and low back pain.
lasted a few days (5-6 days) and they mostly went away.
on 11/14/06 10 1/2 weeks or 73 days post encounter ( and in meantime no other encounters) i had another rapid blood and swab test done of 20 minute test which came back neg.

i a freaking out and don't know what to do???

help----looking for accuracy at 10 weeks and if i should go again to test now

Hi Notcalm

i agree with the Doc.  I rang numerous HIV clinics in Australia ( the ones that the Doc refers to being some of the best in the world) and asked them about 10/11 week tests and conclusivity.

All orgainisations I have spoke to has said tests in use are very sensitive and are reliable at 6 weeks.  I asked what the chances are of testing positive after a negative at the 10/11 week mark.

All persons i spoke to including a Dr, said that the chance is near zero and it just wont happened and for me to get on with my life.

Also, if you cant except a 10 week test, I think you are in the same frame as mind as me, and i doubt any extra testing will provide conclusive answers, it will always be in the back of your head. Due to this, i suggest you get counselling from a knowledgeable professional, to help you get past this.  Dont worry i am getting counseling as well and hope it helps.

I am at the same point you are at....i know the anxiety you feel...

I repeat: You did not get HIV from the sexual encounter you described.  Your HIV test results prove it without doubt.  None of the other issues you raise, whether your WBC count, taking doxycycline, or anything else changes that fact.  Follow up with your provider if you are concerned, but put HIV out of your mind.  Do not keep posting irrelevant questions on this forum.  It is a waste of everybody's time and energy, including yours.

What the hell does WBC have to do with HIV?  You say you've had a 10 week test?  Great move on.

I went on anitbiotics (Doxyciline and amoxociline 2 rounds) for a while and had some simular stuff.  I also had some acne after.  I wonder if overuse of antibiotics causes the body to act wierd or allow infections/muscell pains.  Remember anti biotics attack all bacteria bad AND good.  Maybe the doc can answer.

by the way i looked up everything you told me to look at in the forum.

can the lymphadenopathy be ARS starting @ 9 weeks--if so does a rapid test a week later show results

there are literally over 100 things that can cause swollen lymphnodes.  and btw, if you had HIV, ARS would cause swollen lymph nodes in your neck, armpits, and groin nodes..And although not painful, they would be noticeable if you pay attention to them, i.e., don't pass it off as something else. and btw, symptoms are NEVER EVER EVER a sign of HIV.  test results are.

But regarding your wbc count, what do you mean by 2.3?  people with full blown AIDS normally have wbc count below 300, from what I've read. and those are usually people who are not taking meds.

but your handle says it all..you need to calm down.  See an HIV specialist in your city..and he should allay your concerns.

and of course, if you have not had an HIV test (standard antibody) done yet..then get one!!it's been almost 8 weeks.  but you said you'd already gotten one done, but obviously you need to be tested again due to your anxiety.

no one is chiding you for your anxiety, but repetetive 'what if' questions just help to feed your paranoia and fixation on the negative thoughts in light of overwhelming facts that contradict your emotional responses.

search the forum for 'time to test positive', 'hiv test window'.

if you still need help..see first, and HIV specialist and then a mental health doctor.  you need it.

no..ARS shows up between 2-4 weeks only. and 10 weeks IS neaqr 100%. You clearly did not read all the posts for 'ARS symptoms' and 'time to test positive HIV' like you said you did. search this website for those two things and read EVERYTHING.

and a rapid test would yes, show results, but in your case not necessary.  Just get a standard antibody test now.  it will be 99% accurate.

Comawn. be logical. it's hard to get HIV via sex from just a few or evern a few hundred 'risque' sex partners. we all freak out initially, but do take a few deep breaths when you're anxious throughout the day, and try to convince yourself that it's too friggin difficult to get HIV unless you're a needle user. and even then there's still some doubt.  relax. calm down. don't ask 'what if' and 'but' questions..they won't get you any respect.  do some homework.  read thebody.com, read aegis.org, and of course this site.  We're here if you need us. Lots of good threads on HIV support. but USE LOGIC...and NOT emotion!!!

The additional information doesn't change my opinion or advice.  With one minor exception:  if your oral and esophageal symptoms have cleared up, you don't need to return to your doc.  Just stay off the doxycycline and go on with life, with confidence you have no health consequences from your sexual exposure.

Relax 10 weeks is plenty of time for an hiv test to show positive.  Your test proves otherwise. Congrads. Stay safe:)

Your negative test 10.5 weeks after the enounter is 100% reliable evidence you did not acquire HIV, regardless of your symtpoms.  In general, symptoms are meaningless in assessing risk of a new HIV infection, which has been addressed many times (search the forum threads for "ARS symptoms" and/or "HIV symptoms").  It sounds like you might have an oral/esophageal yeast infection (thrush), but that occurs in immunologically normal people and can be triggered by broad spectrum antibiotics like doxycycline.

All you need to do now is return to your doc and follow his or her advice about your oral/esophageal symptoms.  You do not need further HIV testing.  (If you question my certainty about 10.5 weeks versus some other interval for another HIV test, search this forum for multiple discussions--look for "time to positive HIV test" and/or "HIV diagnosis".)

For what it's worth, I doubt you needed doxycycline for a month, or that you acquired any STD that explained your urinary symptoms.  But I understand that's not the central issue on your mind.

Good luck--  HHH, MD
