This forum is limited to prevention of HIV and to safe sex in general. If you believe you might have been exposed to HIV and want help to judge your risk, would like advice about HIV testing, or have questions about the effectiveness of condoms or the risks associated with specific sexual practices, this is the site for you.

IMPORTANT

No questions will be accepted on the treatment of HIV/AIDS or its complications, viral load, and similar topics. If you have questions about a specific STD other than HIV/AIDS, please visit the STD Forum. Questions that do not pertain to the above topics will be removed from the forum.

If you have not done so, please review other threads in our archives for questions similar to yours and Dr. Handsfield's replies. Questions that duplicate other frequent ones, for which abundant replies exist, and that have little educational value for other forum users, will be DELETED WITHOUT RESPONSE. YOUR PAYMENT WILL NOT BE REFUNDED. The most common examples of such questions are those about low risk exposures to HIV, such as oral sex, condom- protected intercourse hand-to-genital exposure, and nonsexual contact with possibly infected blood or body fluids as well as symptoms of early HIV infection.

Doctor,

I had written a few weeks ago about exposure to sex workers and had gotten tested for HIV, it came back negative. As a follow up, how prevalent is transmission to United States uncircumcised hetrosexual males who have protected vaginal sex with female sex workers and have oral sex, sometime with and sometimes without a condom. The reason I ask is although this test came negative, I really have no other "normal" sexual relationship, and this is my means of of fulfilling my sexual needs.  How often have you seen a positive test in an instance like this, and would you rate my behavior -  high risk, low risk, medium risk (whatever that is). I believe I recently read the CDC reccomends testing once a year, is this your opinion also.

The zero to low risks of HIV transmission by oral sex have been repeatedly discussed on this forum, including a number of questions in just the past 2-3 days.  Search the threads for "HIV transmission risk" and "oral sex".  There also have been discussions of circumcision status; search for "circumcision".

I have many times given the same annual testing recommendation as CDC, for sexually active persons outside committed monogamous relationships.  More frequent testing is recommended for people at particularly high risk, such as gay men with multiple partners.
