CIRRHOSIS-HEPATITIS B-TREATMENT

by aks, Nov 18, 2000 12:00AM
I was recently diagnosed for cirrhosis per chance during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The liver biopsy confirmed cirrhotic liver.I consulted a gastroentrologist who asked me to get HBsAg test. The result of the test was positive. The relevant other tests done & results are as stated below:

Blood  :  Anti HCV                  : -VE

HBV DNA (PCR Qualitative) : +VE

          SGOT(AST)                 : 35.00 U/L

          SGPT(ALT)                 : 43.00 U/L

          GGTP                      : 55.00 U/L

          ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE(ALP) : 159.00 U/L

          BILIRUBIN (TOTAL)         :   0.80 mg/dL

          BILIRUBIN (DIRECT)        :   0.20 mg/dL

          BILIRUBIN (INDIRECT)      :   0.60 mg/dL

          PROTEIN (TOTAL)           :   8.10  g/dL

          ALBUMIN                   :   4.20  g/dL

          A : G RATIO               :   1.08

          HAEMOGLOBIN               :   14.50 g/dL

          PLATLETS COUNT            :  121.00 thou/mm3

UGI Endoscopy      : Grade-Ix3 esophagus varices,

                     acute duodenal ulcers

I am hypertensive & diabitic which is controlled by medicines.

My gastroentrologist has advised me to take a course of inj. INTERFERON,(1.5 mu per day)for 16 weeks alongwith Tab lumividine

100 mg.

I am further advised to go for following tests:

Alpha-Feto proteins

Serum Iron studies

Serum Ferrtein levels

Serum Protiens electrophoresis

Now my question is :

(a) whether I should take Interferon ?

(b) whether the dosage 1.5 mu per day is suitable as against 5.0 mu per day?

(c) Will the interferon treatment be harmful in my case?

(d) whether the combination of Interferon & limuvidine suitable in my case?

(e) What happens if the Interferon course is stopped before completion.

(f) Will the results of further tests effect the treatment prescribed?

Kindly advise at the earliest.

Thanks

AKS
