hepatic encephalopathy

My mother has been a chronic alchoholic for over 30 years. She has been diagnosed with late to end stage cirrhosis for several years. Over the past year she has shown increased confusion and withdrawal which we attributed to being drunk. As a desperate measure we went to court to have her put in detox. On the day she entered, albeit drunk, she was driving, talking, oriented. After the detoxification she was almost comotose. After 3-4 weeks of lactalose and laxatives she is extremly weak, although her tremors are gone, and very confused. One moment lucid the next not. What are her chances of reaching a level of ability that would allow her to go home rather than a nursing home which is what is being suggested? Also, is this apparent over night deterioration in her mental status typical after the alcohol was removed?
