Great News over New Protease Inhibitor BILN 2061

by Skepsis, Jul 06, 2003 12:00AM
The Great news are coming from Germany stating that previous bad news about terminating or stopping of the research project for BILN 2061 (a very potent protease inhibitor from Boehringer against HCV already in clinical trials) for some adverse effects were simply not true.

These denials are attributed to PR-office and research officer at Boehringer-Ingelheim. A chief medical researcher has been cited as well who has been personally conducted clinical trials already in stage II.

There should have no severe adverse effects been detected during or after therapy, no heart failure, wether in human nor in animal. Some bad news simply have been attributed "to the concurrence".

These make great hope and relief for all of us non-responders to standard (Peg-)interferon and Ribavirin based therapies (about half of all HCV-carriers), as well as for all of those who cannot (or are simply not willing to) take the risks of (perhaps long lasting) adverse effects of taking interferon for a year.

A major information disclosure is to be expected latest by the end of october 2003 at the annual meeting of AASLD.

Prospects of a newly engineered causal therapy (as BILN 2061 from Boehringer Ingelheim) which eliminates the virus within weeks combined with interferon or even without it are generally discussed in some similar forums in Germany and there are hopes for their availability as early as 2004 or 2005.

I just found out that I am not a responder ro Pegasys and Ribavirin after being on treatment for 3 months. What a bummer.  There have been promising drugs other than the Peg and Rib who had big promise till human trials. I want so bad to believe there is something really concrete coming not just a pipe dream. Am open to all comments.
