12 week test and other meds

by MrsHep, Oct 18, 2003 12:00AM
You all are so helpful, and hopeful. I appreciate reading this site and praying for you all.

Hubby took shot #12 last night.  It should be fine to take his blood test by 3 or 4 days after, isn't it?  The doctor said this test will show if the meds are working or not.  If they are, he'll continue another 24 or 48 weeks.  If they are not, he will stop TX.  Is that standard for everybody? I haven't read anything like that.

Also, unfortunately, he has had seizures and has migranes. He takes an anti-seizure med (Dylantin) and headache pain meds (Darvon).  The doctor knows this, but I'm concerned these meds will be messing with his liver and the TX, therefore, might not be able to work. I've not found any internet information to confirm this.  THANK YOU.

all drugs do have to be processed by the liver.   how it metabolizes drugs depends on the damage the liver has sustained . i personally have  been sensitive to many meds-but i had this over 30 years.  we do have to use drugs to manage side effects of treatment or medical problems.  not really a choice for most of us.    some feel that milk thistle helps protect the liver from damage.    eating well and taking good iron-free vitamins may also help.  there are some sites that map out liver friendly diets. etc..   the best to u both.

I take shot #12 on Thursday 23rd and blood test the following Monday. If I have a two log drop or show undetectable I will continue, if not I stop as I would be a non-responder.

It's up to doc if he says the other drugs are safe or not. My doc lets me take a little ibuprofen (most of us can't take this sort of stuff)but my liver is a lot better off than some. If you are confident in doc listen if not get a second opinion.

My 2 cents. There are a lot more qulified people on this site than me but a lot don't post on weekends.

I was at my regular Dr. today and he told me that any meds they can give thruogh patches instead of pills. the the drug goes into blood stream instead of liver. It might be worth checking into God Bless   Joni

FYI, liver is kinda oil filter in your car... If you inject drugs into bloodstream, they will end up going through liver.

Yes, having his blood drawn for that test in 3 days is fine. It is called a PCR RNA or Heptimax or ? But it tells what level of virus is found in his blood.  Some are lucky and have none detected at 12 weeks, some have viruses still circulating. Your doc will let you know in a week to 12 days what they find.  And yes, it is common to do that at 12 weeks.  Some get it done sooner and some have to wait even longer...doctors vary.  Since the doctor knows what meds he is on for headaches and seizures plus treatment meds, dont worry bout it. You didnt say what level of damage was found by biopsy...but the more damage the harder it is for the liver to cleanse the blood.    Many here have had to take many many meds and have cleared the virus. Sounds like the doctor is taking good care of him.  Best of luck to the both of you!  If you have further questions, try to post them under one you have already started (recently, not way way down the page!) as we only get 5 -6 "threads" per day.  We get alot of room under each thread, but only 5 -6 questions. The weekends seem a bit slower but Mon - Fri is busy busy here!  Keep comin back, you will always be welcome and find caring and helpful, supportive people here!   Hugs, OHC

I am prone to migraines and take a prescribed medicine, Zomig, to alleviate them. While on treatment I was told I could continue with it  but never more than 5mg a day. In other words, I just had to be careful with the Zomig.

We are all pulling for you jamit_a.  Don't let the anticipation of your results get to you too much.  Just move forward and keep thinking about a positive test result in your mind.

Sounds like you are doing good.  Hang in there!

Hey, Jamit, you've gotten over the top of the hill, and the road is downhill from here, as in coasting to the finish line.  Good luck with your PCR results.  Maj Neni
