Blood Transfusions? How soon after stop Peg. does WBC and RBC come up?

by Ella Mackenzie, Jun 27, 2004 12:00AM
I haven't posted for a while but still try to keep up with the posts. I was wondering if any of you have had blood transfusions due to anemia. I have had two so far. I have 5 weeks left of treatment and looks like I will need another transfusion before this is over. I have cleared the virus at 4 weeks and have type 3. Have had so many problems with low WBC and low RBC and platelets. Neupogen 3x a week and Procrit 1x per week.I have had to lower my dose of interferon once due to platelets at 43. Now they are back up (to 55) and I am crossing my fingers I will be able to finish in 5 weeks.

Anyone have ideas on how long it will take after I finish with the Pegysys and Co Peg for my RBC and WBC to return to normal?

Thanks so much and hope everyone is doing well and hanging in there. Some days that is all I can do is count the hours and other days are much better.

My blood counts were all back to normal at 6 weeks, however my platelettes were at 2.5 at 23 weeks and they took a little longer. I only did 24 weeks.   Joni

Hi, Ella, I hope you have a fast five weeks.

I was on 2 Procrits and 2 Neupogens/wk. during tx; still rode out my 48 weeks with HGB mostly in the 8's range; HCT around 27; WBC around 1.5 usually.

After tx, my reds came up fairly steadily with good gains at 6 and 12 weeks post (HGB ~8 at finish back up to around 10 by week 6 and over 11 by week 12.)  My white count was still pretty low at week 12, about 2.5.

On my first tx attempt, I was taken off tx due to an "adverse event", namely very severe anemia leading to a "sincope event".  At that time, I received two units of packed red cells.

Thanks everyone. I guess I will still be on procrit and neupogen even after the interferon is finished. I was curious because I am going on a trip and I will have to take shots with me even though am not looking forward to that as I have been a wimp and nurses give me procrit.
