Short cervix and circlage

.I am 6 weeks pregnant (1st time) and have been told that I have a very short cervix. Specifically, that they can not see the part of the cervix that is outside. This is probably due to a cone and leep which occured several years ago. The doctor is stating that the part of the cervix which is inside may be long enought to maintain the pregnancy, but that the ultrasound to determine the length will not be done until about 12-16 weeks of pregnancy and then the determination of whether a circlage is necessary will be made. In doing my research, I understand that the later a circlage is done the higher the risk of miscarriage. Is there a reason why the ultarsound cannot be done earlier? Also can a circlage be done earlier than 12 weeks to prevent miscarriage?
Thanks for your help.

.I am having a circlage performed at 12 weeks. My first Ultra-sound to measure my cervix was at 9 weeks. I have had two cervical cone biopsies within the last six months, so of course the procedure is very necessary for me. I see a high risk perinatologist and receive ultra sounds every 3-4 weeks. I was told these procedures are done before 14 weeks to lessen the chance of miscarriage.

.All I can say to you is thank goodness you have a doctor that actually stays up on your condition. I too had a cone and was told at the beginning of my pregnancy that we needed to keep an eye on my cervix. That was the last they said about it until I was 18 weeks along and my water broke. ( I had been to the doctor only days before). My story does not have a happy ending. Limit your activity and make sure your doctor checks your cervix at every visit. I wish I had asked more questions. Next time I'm going to request a cerclage. I too have been told that most cerclages are done between 12-14 weeks. Good Luck to you.
