Bilirubin in urine???

by logansmom, Apr 08, 2003 12:00AM
My 3 1/2 YO son has been complaining of abdominal pain for about 2 months.  After the 3rd trip to his pediatrician, they have decided to at least run a urinalysis.  It showed bilirubin and ketones in his urine.  He had also been having frequent, pale (almost white) BM's for about 2 weeks, but that seems to have gone away although there are still pale "chunks" (sorry to be gross!) mixed in with normally colored feces.  Upon examination, the Dr also noticed spider veins and very dark veins in his chest, and petechia on his hands and face.

The Ped referred us to a GI to check for liver problems.  My question is - what can I expect from the exam?  What tests are they likely to run?  I know they are doing a blood test - that is already scheduled for tomorrow and the GI appt is Monday the 14th.  If this is a liver problem, where could it have come from?  Could it be correcting itself - it light of the more normally colored BM's?

He is a child who is sick VERY often (every 2-3 weeks since birth), he has severe chronic asthma and moderate reflux.

Any help you can give is GREATLY appreciated.

I wish I knew...

For sure he will have liver enzymes run.  Could be some sort of obstructive liver problem...

Please let us know what you find out.  Will pray for you both.

Thanks Christie.  His blood test is today, but I'm sure we won't get results until Monday.  In this case - probably no news is good news.

I am comforted that his stool has become more like it's "normal" color, but hope that this isn't something that will "come and go".  I'd hate to miss a big problem if there is one.

Thanks again.

Now I got a call from the GI Dr's office saying that they are comfortable with the testing that the pediatrician did - and they do not want to do additional blood tests.  The problem is that the Pediatrician didn't do any blood tests!  UGH!

Maybe it's just me...
