Seizures and abnormal EEG

| . | My pediatrition has been very unconcerned and slow acting upon my son's recent medical problems. Aaron who is 6yrs had a seizure at school and he had one two years ago that they thought was a febrile seizure. Although after this seizure he had pain on his right side and had trouble with walking for a week following the seizure. He had an EEG done which came back abnormal. I just want to know what the following means.
EEG Diagnosis: Abnormal record, generalized epileptiform discharges with spike and slow wave during sleep.
At the onset of this sleep deprived tracing the patient was drowsy. The striking feature of the sleep recording was the presence of numerous episodes of paroxysmal activity, sometimes consisting of paroxyemal burst of slow activity alone but more often is slow activity admixed with spike and poly-spike wave activity, sometimes this was in duration of about one second, no clinical accompaniment was noted. It was difficult to tell, at times these episodes appeared to have a more focal onset over the right hemisphere but this was not consistant and certainly almost all these events had bihemispheric sharp and slow wave activity on the EEG. These were present numerous times throughout the sleep recording. The remainder of the sleep recording demonstrated abundant spindles and vertex waves without any rhythmic or persistant focal slowing. The patient was awakened at the end of the tracing and a brief recorded portion of waking tracing demonstrated a background rhythm ranging 9 hertz. Th epileptiform discharges were less prominent waking&sleeping. |

Clinical Interpretation: The EEG shows seizure tendancy with numerous epileptiform discharged sometimes with a right sided predominance. Clinical correlation is required.
Now all my pediatrition has told me about the above is that the EEG came back abnormal (which is obvious) and that she would have to speek with the neurologist. This was like 3 weeks ago, I have been calling and calling their office and still no answers. I even called Childrens hospital in Columbus, OH and got his name on a cancellation list in the neurology dept. and had his insurance cleared and had them fax his pediatrition the papers to release his medical stuff and they woln't do it for some reason . They just keep giving me a different excuse every time I call. I am just so concerned and havent heard anything good about the neurologist he is supposed to see. They were wanting to start him on Topiramate but I wouldn't let them until I see the neurologist. I mean they can't even tell me what is wrong and yet they are going to put him on medication, furthermore I don't think that they know what is going on. So, any info would be greatly appriciated! |
