Quant. Levels at 7 weeks § question re: Blighted Ovum

by sheshrink, Jun 26, 2003 12:00AM
Hi there. Just wondering if anyone knows what the desirable levels are for a 7 week pregnancy. Also, in the case of a blighted ovum, do regular symptoms of pregnancy continue?

Thanks and hopefully I will have some good news to post in the future.

I don't know exactly what the levels should be at 7 weeks, but I do know that when I was pregnant back in March, I started spotting at about 5 weeks for 2 days, then it stopped completely for 2 weeks. In that 2 weeks, I continued to progress as though it was a normal pregnancy, then I started spotting, mainly brown, for about 5 days....I finally (at my 4th sonogram in a month's time, was told that it was definitely a blighted ovum.)  The gest. sac went from perfectly round the week before, to a little larger, and more rectangular in shape, the dr. said it was beginning to flatten out, which is bad.  I never saw anything more than a yolk sac inside the placenta and that was at the 3rd sono. the week before.  I felt somewhat pregnant.....very, extremely tired and extremely sore breasts, but nothing else.  My uterus had grown quite a bit..and by the time I had my d & c, (around 9.5 weeks), I had a little "Pooch".  That's the hardest part of it all for me, because I felt pregnant and was starting to look a little pregnant, but there was no fetus...I hope you're situation is different...Put it in God's hands and he'll take care of you.

Please let me know the outcome, I'll pray for you.

Oh, about the levels...the other deceiving thing of it all was that my levels continued to more than double with each blood test....The doctor said that was all very typical of a blighted ovum, and that if I had waited much longer, they would have not increased as much as time went by, and that I would eventually see more signs of the miscarriage.  I chose a d and c because the dr. said it helps to finalize the pregnancy that is inevitably going to end and that it's good to have a d and c because he like to send off that placenta to be tested, which gave me comfort or closure knowing nothing came back seriously abnormal.

The levels for 7 weeks are across the board (as with all stages).  They say the range is 7,650 - 229,000..I've been having my own HCG problems so I have done quite a bit of research on the subject and that seems really consistent with all the charts I've looked at. What are your levels?

Hi thunder214...my level was 22,000 yesterday, will go tomorrow to see what the increase is. I will hope for the best and keep y'all posted.  Take care and thanks for posting.

Hi Silo...thanks for your posting. Just a quick q about your past blighted ovum if that is ok...did you have spotting that was blood-like or was it more like mucous/discharge, did you have a lot of it, and finally, did you cramp at all? Any info you could provide would be so helpful. Thanks for sharing your experience with me. Much appreciated.

The only discharge I had was brown, almost tissue-like.  Sometimes it was a little pink and ONCE it was a very small amount of red when I wiped.  I never once had cramping at all.  The nurse said it was hard to tell if I was going to miscarry because with a blighted ovum you sometimes have no symptoms of miscarriage.  What are your symtoms now and how far along are you?  Please refresh my memory on your situation I'm sorry I can't keep up with each person's story.  Have you had any sonograms?

I also want to add...please don't think that I am trying to be negative or put bad thoughts in your head, I would never do that, I am just giving the facts from my personal experience and because every situation is different your's could turn out to be a perfectly healthy pregnancy and I hop it is.Good luck

Hi Silo...as you asked, my symptoms are occasional light brown d/c when I wipe, very small amount but it worries me. I am now 7 weeks 2 days. No cramping etc and am having the typcial preg. symptoms (frequent urination, sore bb's, nausea, extremem fatigue).  Last levels were 22000, will know my current ones soon. I went for a sono at exactly 6 weeks, saw a gest. sac and yolk sac but no fetus, doc thought too early so I go again on Tues. Nurses didnt seem worried b/c of my levels but I have read up on the blighted o and worry b/c of the discharge and also b/c saw no fetus. I guess our bodies go through a lot during this pregancy thing! Well I will keep you posted, and thanks for sharing with me, I really appreciate it. :-)

My sonogram at 5.5 weeks showed a small gest. sac and nothing inside.  The sonogram at 6.5 weeks showed a gest. sac that had grown with a yolk sac and no fetus....the next sono. was at about 8.5 weeks and that's when the doctor determined it was a blighted ovum.  I hope for only the best outcome for you...When's your next sonogram?  And how long ago was the last sono?

I had a blighted ovum at about six weeks and my symptoms were mild cramping and light bleeding. It wasn't until after I found out that I was miscarrying that I began to bleed more heavily.  However, it was never any heavier than a regular period and was only a couple of days longer.  The blood was generally very red with no tissue but became more brown later.  My HCG levels were super low, only a fraction of 22,000.

All that being said, I have a good friend who is about six months pregnant who had fairly heavy brown spotting around six weeks and then again between seven and eight weeks.  She went in for an ultrasound and everything was fine.  You may want to ask your doctor at what HCG level they should be able to see a heartbeat.  My understanding is that what they are able to see on the US is not based strictly on the number of weeks that you are but has more to do with how high your hormone levels are.

Good luck!!

I had an IVF with date of embryo-transfer on 11 of June. On 23th of June a had a positive blood test of hgg 25 mlu that was doubling every two days. On 7th July i had my first vaginal ultrasound (on 6003 hgg) which showed a gest sac of mean diametr 0,60 cm. On 17th of July I had a second vaginal ultrasound which showed that the gest sac was larger and a round yolk sac in it. I'll do my next ultrasound on 22 of July (5 days after the last one). Is there any hope for this pregnancy or i must prepare myself for a blighted ovum... What are my chances???
