Blighted Ovum or Viable Pregancy??

by goughy, Jun 27, 2003 12:00AM
I am currently 7w6d pg. At 12dpo I had a blood test showing my hcg level to be 22. At 6w2d I had a vaginal scan and all my doctor could see was the sac. I had a blood test done that day and the result was 9088. I had another scan done 3 days later (6w5d) and the result was 14308. I then had a scan at 7w4d and there is still only a sac to be seen, although my doctor did mention there was a 'fetal echo'. I am not sure what he meant by that. The sac had grown in size and the blood test done that day was 25065.

I am finding it very worrying not being able to see the embryo and am confused as to whether this pregnancy is viable or not. After the second scan mentioned a curette, but said we would wait another week to see what happened. I am now nervously waiting for that scan and am confused as to why my hcg levels are still increasing when there appears to be no embryo.

I would greatly appreciate any advice you have to give as to what my chances are of this pregancy being viable. I have already suffered 4 miscarriages and am dreading going through another. I have had one live birth and thought that I might be passed all of this.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks for your help!

at your gestational age, you're supposed to see the fetus in utero.

so, the unviable pregnancy could not be ruled out.

anyway, you've already experienced several miscarrage, so I think you need proper evaluation before getting pregnant.

Hi there,

Have you had any brown discharge by chance? From what I read that is also an indicator of a blighted o. I myself have been wondering about this-I went at 6 weeks and no fetus was seen. However some docs think it is too early to see at 6 or 7 weeks-your rising levels are encouraging but be sure to go back for another ultra soon. Keep us posted and I wish you the best. God Bless.

I had a blighted ovum and d & c on April 24th.  I had spotting off and on from about 5.5 wks until 9.5 weeks.  The spotting was mainly brown and my nurse who I am very close to said brown spotting is more common with a blighted ovum.  The sac seen on the first u/s was small and empty, 10 days later the sac had grown and there was a tiny yolk sac and no fetus.  A couple of weeks later, the sono. showed a bigger sac, that was irregular in shape and there was nothing inside...the doctor then determined it to be unviable without a doubt.  Having a blighted ovum really stinks, because there are so few symptoms often times.  I had a very small amount of spotting and that was it...other than that, I felt very pregnant and my hcg levels continued to double...I will be thinking of you and will remember you in my prayers...Good luck.
