Update, Subchorionic hematoma § D/C Question

by sheshrink, Jul 12, 2003 12:00AM
Hello there, thank you so much for reading about my experience and I hope you can offer some insight for me.

Last week when I was just under 9 wks, LMP, I had a horrible miscarriage due to a subchorionic hematoma (SH). I am still not sure what this is as I have not been fully informed about what happened. This is particularly distressing for me because one week before, we saw the little fetus and heart pounding away, and were told everything looked great and to have a great weekend. Well the ultrasound techs did not tell me that I had a SH at that ultrasound-I found out when I called the nurse after having extremely bad cramps, blood loss, and passing of large clots. It was just horrible and I feel that I should have been told about the SH when they noticed it. Anyhow, there was half an inch of residing fetal/embryo matter in my uterus and I am having a really hard time dealing with the possibility of a D&C. Have any of you had a D&C experience you would like to share? Thanks so much. I hope all of you are doing well, this website has been so helpful. Thanks again.

I had a D & C back in April after my 1st miscarriage. I struggled with the decision to either m/c naturally or have the D & C. i opted for the D & C becasue I hated not knowing when the natural m/c might occur. Naturally, they can last up to 10 days, and sometimes very heavy bleeding and cramping. I thought the D & C would be quicker, and a faster ending to the very difficult situation.  I could have had the procedure in my Dr.'s office with local anethesia, or at the hospital, where they put you out. I opted to be awake because I felt very comfortable with my Dr. I went in the day before to get the Laminaria plugs put in ( small seaweed rods that are inserted in your cervix to slowly dialate you). That was very crampy that night, just like bad menstrual cramps.  Then I had the D & C the next morning. The procedure is so quick, the pain lasts only for seconds and then you are done!!!. I think I had my feet in the stirrups for a total of 7 minutes from start to finish.  Afterwards, I felt fine. Not even a cramp!!!. I had moderate bleeding for about a week, and then I was fine.

Personally, for me, it was the best option. Do not be afraid. Is it the pain you are worried about? I brought in some headphones with me in the Dr.'s office and had them on the whole time, it took my mind off of it. Everyone will tell you what they think is best, but only you can decide.  Any more questions, please ask. Hope this helps.
