High Fiber Diet during pregnancy?

by aben, Oct 19, 2003 12:00AM
My spouse is 8 weeks in pregnancy, and she seems to have irregularity. Her nausea worsens because of that. She does eat fruit daily, but it is not very helpful. Any suggestions on how to avoid irregularities during pregnancy without taking pills or other artificial stimulant would be very appraciated.

Bran is a good way to help things along. I too avoid meds while pg and have felt that varied sources of fiber can help without the worry of overuse.

It is also safe to use colace or another form of stool softeners if needed. If it is absolutely necessary, you can use Milk of Magnesia, but not too frequently. Despite some previous posts on this issue, even overuse of this medication can cause bowel dependence.

One great non medication option is also a glass of white grape and pear juice, seems to work for everyone I know (pg or not) without the hard to stomach taste of prune juice : )

And as always, keep her drinking lots of water as that can be the biggest help overall.

Hope this helps!

Hi - Constipation during pregnancy is very common. It can help a lot to increase both soluble and insoluble fiber. And soluble fiber supplements are safe during pregnancy - look for something like acacia, which is an organic plant soluble fiber with no additives. If you need info about soluble and insoluble fibers, there's a good info site here http://www.helpforibs.com/diet/fiber1.asp  The site itself is for Irritable Bowel Syndrome but the fiber info is applicable to anyone.
