HCG and Progesterone Levels

by babygapmomx4, Nov 22, 2003 12:00AM
Hi! I am about 5 wks 4 days pregnant that is if I go by date of ovulation (10/28/03) and about 6 weeks if I go by LMP (10/11/03)

I got my BFP on 10/12/03 :)I have already been my my first OB appt and was given the stuff needed to get my lab work done.

I had my bloodwork done on 11/19/03 in the early afternoon. Yesterday 11/21 I get a phone call from on of my Drs nurses and she told me that they were calling in a precrip. for me for progesterone as my levels were a little low. My HCG was 2119.2 and my P4 was 10. The nurse said it should be about 12. I am so scared right now. I have been reading and reading stuff on progesterone and there is a lot of confusing info out there.

So same once you get a BFP that progesterone won't help you. I have seen were there are a lot of women are on it and are doing great so far. He put me on 200mg of Prometrium once a day. I am wondering if I should ask for suppositories instead? I read they work better and the oral work the least best.

I am scared I am going to lose my baby. I know its every early in the pregnancy. I have had 4 healthy children with no problems what so ever and I am only 33 yrs old. Never had any trouble getting pregnant either, ever. I should mention that I did have a MC on 8/3/03 with a D and C on 8/7/03. I had to normal period after that 9/10 and 10/11. I was thinking maybe my uterus lining wasn't built up enought??? sorry for rambling here and I might just be grasping at straws, I just don't want anything to happen to this baby.

Thanks

Laura

I would ask for supposities.  Every doctor's opinion about the effectiveness of progesterone once you are pregnant varies.  But most REs will tell you it does work (no way to prove it).  There is no down side to natural progesterone so I think there is no reason not to take it if your level is low.  Anyway, the suppositories are much more effective, albeit more of an inconvenience, but that's the way I would go.  Best wishes

Hi!! My progesterone at 5 wks preg was 9.5 so they started me on prog shots once per wk. My prog dropped down to 7.2 and eventually went back up to 8.5. I too was very scared as I had read that it had to be at least 15 to maintain the prgncy. I am now 21 wks preg with a healthy baby boy so try not to worry. Good Luck!!! Ginger

Thanks girls!

I did call the Dr on call and ask for suppositories. She said I could use the prometrium as a suppository as well, but I feel more comfortable with the real deal.

She also said my numbers were not bad for 25 DPO HCG of 2119.2 amd P4 of 10, but maybe its just a safety measure????

I hope so! I am still not gonna be at ease until I have my sono and see that little heart beating!

Laura,

Your levels are not bad so try not to worry.  I had a miscarriage this summer and my progesterone at 5 wks was 3!  With suppositories, it went up 10 11 in 2 wks.  The baby died at around 9 wks but there's no way to even know if it was because of the low progesterone or a chromosomal problem that was unavoidable.  So, have faith and take care!

Unfortunately there is no proof progesterone works. Some swear it does, but no studies have proven its effectiveness enough to make it part of the standard of care.

But it can't really hurt anything, maybe it is worth a shot.

Andi is absolutely right.  Probably won't hurt, might help.
