Caffeine while TTC

by StephW, Feb 28, 2004 12:00AM
I know that women pregnant shouldn't drink caffeine and they say even while TTC to avoid it. But does anyone know why and how this could effect your fertility while TTC???

I'm a coke drinker and haven't really been drinking too much in the past but this month, I've been having alot, 2-3 drinks a day of coke!  Is this bad?  How can it effects my chances of conceiving?  Anyone w/ any advice, please. -Thanks.

Heh you,

I was wondering the same thing and asked my really close friend who had a baby, she is a really heavy coffee drinker and coke drinker like I am. She told me that she never cut any of that stuff out until she found out that she was PG, and then she ended up drinking decaf coffee. Her baby is now going to be turning 2 and he is very healthy, in fact he was almost a 9 pound baby. Oh and she still drank coke on occassion, just not much of it.

Hey Stephw, they say keep away from caffine when ttcing, it could mess up yor hormones or something. They say a cup of tea per day gives you a much better chance of conceiving though. I'm trying it. Stick to decafe coffee!

Ok, thanks girls for the info.  And yeah, I've been hearing alot of talk here about tea increase fertility or something.  I love green tea (arizona kind) and used to drink it alot, maybe I'll get back on that.

Surprisingly enough, a study did suggest that men can and should drink moderate amounts of caffeine while TTC as it helps with his motility (makes those swimmers work better). My dh is a soda addict, he will drink at least 6 a day (Mt.Dew or Coke) maybe that is why we got pg again so quickly?

I have heard many times about the link between caffeine and m/c, but nothing that actually said what the cause was specifically. I am a huge coffee/soda drinker and was while TTC. I cut back dramamtically while pg as the smell of coffee literally made me throw up. Now that most of that has passed, I do drink a soda or 2 a day or even get a latte if the mood strikes. Moderation is the key. I wouldn't go and drink a pot of coffee or a case of soda every day, but a cup or two won't hurt.

Good luck!!

Just a little FYI, I do believe green tea has caffeine in it... you might want to check that out before you make the switch.

wether ttcing or not i don't think that that much caffeine is good for, especially pop.

They have decaffeinated green tea.  I drink it all the time.  A little caffeine is not going to hurt.  My doctor said that you'd have to drink over 4 cups of coffee a day everyday to even put yourself at a higher risk for miscarriage.

I cut out soda's completely while ttc with dd and this time as well. I drink decaf tea and have never drank coffee. I have found now that I hate the taste of coke and it doesn't quench my thirst at all.

As for drinking it while ttc or while preg, and carbonated beverage, be it caffeinated or not, depletes your body of much needed calicium. One 12 oz can of soda depletes your body of an entire day's worth of calicium. There is some ingredient in it (I can't name it off the top of my head) that bonds to any calcium in your body and carries it away with it as waste. Caffeine is also addictive in large amounts. A newborn can experience caffeine withdrawal after birth if his mother consumed large amounts previous to delivery. There is no nutritional value in soda's and while an occasional soda is okay, I certainly wouldn't make it a constant habit if you want to provide your baby optimum chances of health!

(disclaimer: this is NOT to say that you cannot drink coke all day every day and not have a healthy baby-I have seen that too, my point is just that if YOU want to provide your baby the BEST chance at health it is probably best to abstain.)

Thanks, I appreciate your response.  I'm going to start a diet/exercise program this week for the month and am going to be drinking alot of water, and cystal drinks (no caff., no calories, etc).....and try my best to stay off of coke.

I don't know what it was this month, but I started drinking it all the time, being my only drink!....
