Embryonic Heartbeat

by lsa, May 12, 2004 12:00AM
Hello Everyone,

This is my first post since having a D/C for a blighted ovum last November. I am currently pregnant and about 8 weeks past my LMP.  I had a vaginal ultrasound yesterday which dated the pregnancy at 6.3 weeks. The little embryo, as well as cardiac activity was visible but looked to me to be too slow. The midwife stated that it was fluttering and gave me the impression that there was no reason to be alarmed.  She wants to repeat the scan in two weeks for proper dating. Although the midwife did not confirm it, nor did she tell me what the actual count was, the heartbeat looked very slow and well under 100 BPM.  Should I be concerned?

I read that the heart starts beating the 5th week but is not really regular heartbeats. It starts being normal at 6 weeks, but is a little slower than at 7 or 8 weeks. Your baby is probably fine, its heart just may be warming up. If your midwife is not worried than things are probably fine. If you still have doubts you could maybe call up a doctors office and ask if that is normal or talk to your midwife. Don't feel stupid for doing it, you are just worried about your baby. It shows how good of a mommy you are.

I agree with Still A Mom. The first week or two are just basically "practice" heartbeats. They serve no real function other than to make sure the heart works. Also, early on in the pregnancy, the baby's heart rate can differ so dramatically. As Still A Mom said, if you are concerned, call your midwife and ask some questions. They should be more than willing to oblige you considering you have already suffered a m/c. The u/s in two wks should really tell you more.

It's a great sign that you've seen the heart beating. Don't worry, she would have cautioned you if she thought it wasn't fast enough. In two weeks, make sure you ask what the BPM are. Good luck and congratulations!!!
