Any anwsers to my 3 yr olds 'MYSTERY' leg pains?

by PWDurant, Sep 12, 2004 12:00AM
My 3 yr old has been complaining of leg pain since he was around 1 1/2 yrs old. At first it was once every 2-3 months and he would wake up out of a sound sleep screaming. After he turned 2 he started complaining approx. once a month. Since turning 3 yrs old he complains every week at least. He wakes up screaming at the top of his lungs that "My legs are sick" People would tell me that this was an attention grabber but I do not believe that he would wake up out of a sound sleep to complain of this and cry for 1 hour or longer about it. Hot towels on his legs sometimes stop the pain but not always. The Doctors seem to be stumped why he does this. He was born at 32 weeks and has no effects from the pre-mature birth that I know of. He drinks plenty of milk and eats pretty normal for a 3 yr old. Any suggestions? Please help I'm going out of my mind!!!!!!

My suggestion would be that it could be growing pains.  I have a club foot and other abnormalities with my legs and I had severe growing pains.  It would only occur when I would have a growth spurt, and I don't remember from when I was that young how it was.  I remember from fourth grade on into high school I had them all the time, until I was done growing.  Any stress such as extended walking or standing for a long time would make it worse.  I used to put a heating pad on it and take motrin and that always seemed to help.  Talk to your doc about that, maybe it's a possability.  Hope this helps a little.

I agree with the growing pains.  My son is now 6 and will sometimes still wake up saying that his knees hurt and would be in tears.  I am pretty sure they were growing pains because he would complain for a couple of days and then nothing.  I would give him some tylenol when he woke up and that seemed to help.  Whn I was a child my growing pains would be so bad I would pull muscles which, made the pain worse.

I agree on the growning pains thing. My son goes through the same thing with his feet. Every so often he wakes up in the middle of the night in tears saying his foot hurts (it alternates between feet). Then about a week later I have to buy him new shoes. This has been happening since he was 6. He's 10 now and wears a mens size 9 1/2 to 10 shoe...I'd say what your son is going through is growing pains. It helps my son to soak in a really warm bath when this happens. Children's advil seems to work really well too. Good luck to you. :o)

Penny,

As a small girl I remember many nights like those you described your son having. Waking up crying,my legs ached terribly. My mom would rub my knees and legs until I would fall asleep. She like many people are under the impression it was growing pains. I believed this until about 5 years ago, when I threw my back out bouncing my son around. Not being much of a believer of Chiropractics at the time I unwillingly went to one. He has become a life long friend. He told me something I was totally unaware of. I have Slight Spinabifida.bones in you spine do not completely connect. My last vertabrae stop about a hairs with from connecting. I can feel it pop out of place, which does not hurt, but it does affect the rest of my back. And the old pains return shortly after. I would highly suggest a trip to a trusted Chiropractor, even if it is just to find more facts. When you disc are pinched all the nerves that lead to different body parts are affected. I remember after my bouncing incident, my small dog jump up to greet me and as his paws touched my calves, It sent me thru the roof with pain. My arms felt like they were on fire. I told my husband I thought I had Leukemia. I spoke first to my medical Dr.

who for unknown reasons felt down my back. I was amazed when she hit some areas that were out of wack. Armed with some muscle relaxers and the suggestion from my Dr, to see a Chiropractor in 3 days I was pain free. I hope this helps. I wish you son the best. Dawn

Penny,

My email got cut up. I would just like to add, that teaming up with a good Medical Dr. and having a consultation with a trusted Chiropractor could prove most enlightening. Not saying this is the case with you son, but it is more common than people know.Yes the advil and the warm wash cloths help, but they do not remove the problem.  I will be happy to answer any question you may have.  I wish you and your son the best.
