IVF question

by Debra_Maine, Oct 25, 2004 12:00AM
Does anyone know when you would consider the conception date when having IVF done? My friend has been trying for 3 years and had IVF done on October 11. She just got a BFP!!! I am so happy for her. I was wondering how far along she is considering where a big part of the natural process is skipped due to the IVF. I know nothing about this topic. Any info would be appreciated. I can't find anything online.

To: IVF Question- your opinion please..
Hi- sorry for hijacking your thread but I'm having big trouble making a big decision and need some opinions and help...

I've said before that my insurance next year will cover IVF.. here's the dilemma- I'm about 100lbs overweight- I've lost about 40lbs so far...but have recently lost my momentum with it...my husband has a low count and motility. I've been giving alot of thought to this...I'm 31 and just watched that documetary "SuperSize me"..it started me thinking-what would happen if i really focused on exercise and weight loss for a year...its open enrollment time at work and i can't decide if i want to take the highest coverage and go for the IVF or if I want to spend some extra money on higher quality food (we all know the stuff that's bad for you is cheaper) and start an exercise program and try to lose the weight. I have PCOS and have been told that weight loss would probably make me ovulate regularly....we have conceived once even with his sperm problem, but we miscarried....so honestly....lay it on me....what shouid I do?

Actually, convenience food is more expenisve than healthy stuff. Maybe not EASIER but it is less expensive in the long run.

As for the IVF-my neighbor conceived her son through IUI-and her fertility specialist refuses to implant her last embryos until she loses at least 50 lbs. She told her that she can't do it for her health. Being overweight was a major factor in her developing pre-eclampsia and delivering her baby 5 wks early.

I have also heard that with major weightloss, you experience a plateau where you just seem to be unable to lose anymore weight for a period. Maybe you have reached this plateau and just need a little push off of it. Have you discussed a weight loss plan with your Dr? They may be able to recomend a diet you can stick with. (And by diet, I don't mean like diet diet, I mean like a meal plan.)

I have lost 100 pounds in my life and it isn't easy. I do believe that if you set your mind to it, you can do it. I actually lost very quickly on the low carb diet although many people think it is unhealthy. I wanted to be skinny for my wedding and I was. As you know from my above post, my friend who had been trying for 3 years just got her bfp after her first try at IVF. I think if it were me, I'd sign up for the insurance knowing that that gives you all of next year to have the IVF done and start your diet now. Because if you wait with the intention of dieting and you don't and they change the insurance again (I am in HR and it happens all the time), then you will have lost your opportunity to have the IVF done. If you start on Weight Watchers now, you can still follow that diet during pregnancy, you just add more milk, protein, etc. and it is a healthy diet. That's my 2 cents for what it's worth. I don't think you should put it off. You want it bad and I think you can manage both in the upcoming year. I have faith in you.

that's a great idea....i hadn't thought about doing both...you mean i can have my low fat no calorie cake and eat it too? :o) I lost the first 40 pretty easy...exercised 1/2 hour a day and limited my caloric intake to a maximum of 1800 per day (most days it was less than that...but i allowed 1800 on a bad day) then i got pregnant, miscarried, gained 10 back- lost it again and now can't seem to get any more to come off. how much weight did you lose in what amount of time- i know you said 100 over the course of your life....i'm thinking losing 8lbs per month would be pretty doable...can't seem to do the low carb thing. i like bread and pasta way too much and felt really deprived when i tried it. maybe weight watchers would be the thing. my company reimburses some of the weekly meeting fee so maybe i'll look into that.

Yes I like Debra-Maine's idea that way you will be healthy for your IVF and if you don't get all the wieght off you won't be depressed because you missed out on the insurance and your still not ovulating! Sign up for the insurance and lose the wieght! Good Luck to you I hope you do it and I do think losing weight will help you conceive they say women who are two thin and exercise too much have the same problem! So maybe that is it! Best of luck!

There is some evidence that a diet such as South Beach can help women with insulin resistance and/or PCOS with respect to improving chances of conceiving.

South Beach is pretty misunderstood.  It is NOT low carb or no carb.  It has an emphasis (after the first 2 weeks) on good carbs, such as whole grains and fruits.  It is actually a very healthy way to eat, and also focuses on what types of fats you take in, too.  Not all fats are bad!

It would cost you next to nothing to try, while you continue your exercise and sign up for the type of insurance you want.  I recommend either finding the book in the library, or spring for the $14 to get it at Walmart.  It really is a very healthy, sensible, and easy way to get yourself back to your optimal weight.  Ivillage has a great, free support group for SBD.  Some of the ladies are TTC, too.

My most recent weight loss was for my wedding and that was 24 pounds in 4 months on the Suzanne Somers low carb diet. But then after the wedding, life was good and I put some back, so just before I got pg, I put myself on a 1400 calorie a day weight watcher type of diet and lost 8.5 pounds in 2 weeks. When I found out I was pg, I upped the calories to 1800 and had been maintaining until the food aversions came and all I want is pizza and pasta, but I'm trying to fight that and eat lean cuisine pizza to satisfy the cravings. It's very doable. Low carb is not recommended for pregnancy because it puts your body into a state of ketosis which is harmful to a fetus so I'm doing the low cal, low fat to be as healthy as I can. But to answer your question about the 100 lbs., when I left my first husband I lost 50 lbs with weight watchers in 4 months. I followed it to the letter. I weighed and measured everything and didn't cheat at all. And that was with no exercise. Then I had a couple of bad relationships where I was so stressed that I didn't eat and the rest just kind of fell off me. When I was done, I had lost 106 pounds. I have since put some back (can't be thin and happy at the same time), but am trying to manage it. I'll go back to low carb after the baby is born to get the weight off, but for now counting calories is working. I wish you all the luck in the world, and I'm here if you ever want to talk or need support. ***@****
