HCGs not quited doubling and Progesterone went up then dropped

by sugarbush21, Jan 12, 2005 12:00AM
I will be 6 weeks pregnant this Friday 1/14.  (Last period began Fri 12/3)

Here are my HCG and Progesterone values on the following dates:

12/30 HCG 49 (no progesterone available)

1/5 HCG 228 Progesterone 9

1/7 HCG 536 Progesterone 13.6

1/11 HCG 1825 Progesterone 10.6

From 12/30 to 1/5 HCG wasn't doubling every 48 hrs so did blood again 1/7 - HCG doubled and Pr went up.  Just to be safe Dr. did the blood again but from 1/7 to 1/11 the HCGs are not quite doubling in a 48 hour period and now Progesterone has gone down.  Have you ever seen this?  Is it possible to have a healthy pregnancy with these two factors together?  I am going in for an ultrasound tomorrow to see that there's something in the uterus and not elsewhere (ectopic).  I know I can't do anything but wait and see but wanted any opinion you can provide.

Thank you.

In my opinion, although the numbers did not quite double in 48 hours, they have certainly gone up. It sometimes takes up to 72 hours to double. They say as long as they go up atleast 60%, that is a good sign. They aren't going down, and that's when you know for sure it isn't good. As far as the progesterone, your dr. can give you supplements to increase your progesterone level. I was on 200mg of Prometrium (brand name of progesterone) 2x a day for the first 13 weeks of my pg. If your doctor doesn't suggest it, ask him. Also, I have read that progesterone numbers fluctuate all day long. You can take a progesterone reading 6x a day and get 6 different readings. Try not to worry too much. I know it's hard, but positive energy is what you need. Good luck to you.

Debra:

Thanks for your reassurance.  I feel totally pregnant (bloated, breast tenderness, morning sickness increasing every day).  Once they look at the ultrasound tomorrow they said they'll give me a progesterone supplement.  They still want to rule out ectopic pregnancy, although I have no symptoms of that and my doctor did an exam last week and was 90% sure it's not the case.

Thanks again & take care.

You are very welcome. I do understand your worries, but it really doesn't sound bad to me. Keep me posted on your u/s if you want.

My dr and I are looking at progesterone for my next pregnancy.  She has not had much experience in prescribing it and was going to do some research for me.  Did you take it orally or vaginally?  Also how soon did you start it?  My dr wants me to come in for a blood test to see if I am pregnant as soon as I think I am, but I forgot to ask her how quickly blood work can pick up the hcg.  Do you know? She thinks I should start the progesterone as quick as possible.

Any info would be great.

It does sound like everything is going ok. You might want to ask your doctor to put you on Prometrium (progesterone supplements) the jury is still out on their effectiveness, but they sure can't hurt and may help increase your progesterone to a level to give the baby a shot....

crossing my fingers for you. :o)

Some women do end up having their babies fine without hcg doubling like the standard.  No pregnancy is a cookie cutter pregnancy.  Visit this web-site for additional encouragement.  I wish you well!
