how long to take progesterone

by lizanne, Jan 13, 2005 12:00AM
I read a comment that someone (sorry- can't remember who) said they were put on progesterone for the first 15 weeks of pregnency... I was on progesterone for the first 10 weeks, and that's it. I am 11 weeks now, so I've been off it for one week. What is the normal length of time that a woman is usually prescribed to take progesterone?  I miscarried at 5 and 11 weeks before.  I have a 12 week appt next week, but I'm lving on pins and needles till then!

It was me. The doctor told me to take it until 13 weeks. I wanted to just finish the bottle, so it took me to 15 weeks. What I have read is that you take it until 12 weeks because that is when the placenta takes over making the progesterone and you don't need it after that.

me too. I also took it longer than 10 weeks. I believe it was 15 or 16 weeks before I stopped. best wishes for your next appt!

I took mine until 9 weeks. The doc told me as soon as they see a strong heartbeat you can stop if you like. I just finished the bottle before I stopped. All docs will tell you something different...just do what you feel is best...it will not hurt to take them. I think until the placents takes over would be best..

I took it thru week 24 - I think mostly because most of my m/cs took place from 13-22 weeks. Again, they said that I could stop @ 20 weeks, but I had just filled it so I finished up the perscription.  Apparently my placenta wasn't kickin' in gear like it should, as quickly as it should have. Good luck! I'm sure that all will be wonderful!

thanks.

I was told to take it until 10 weeks... I only had enough left to last me a few days past that.  Supposedly there is dabate over exactly when the placenta takes over.... hopefully mine is sooner than later! :)
