tylenol # 3

by mary345, Jul 13, 2006 12:00AM
i went to the Er at about 2:30 this morning because i was having such bad cramps that i just sat there and cried. the baby is fine they did an u/s and everything looked great there was a nice strong heartbeat of 167. by the way i am 11 weeks pregnant the dr's there gave me tylenol # 3 for pain and i guess my question is are there no side effects for the baby i know the dr wouldn't give me something that could hurt the baby i am just paranoid i don't wanna take it if there is a risk i would rather deal with all the pain.

I dont know about side affects, but i do know that tylenol #3 has a large ammount of codine.  I would suggest calling your obgyn and asking him/her if it is ok.  YOU can do some research on the internet too.  Good luck and sticky baby dust to you:)

There are no adequate studies on codeine and pregnancy, however, there are no reported side effects.  It's a Class C drug.  If you take it regularly and close to delivery there is a chance the baby might be born with a slight addiction (depending on how much you use) but that is easily treated as well if they know about it.

I have been prescribed vicodin and percocet throughout my pregnancy and have been assured by my doctors (and by my own research) that it should not hurt the baby's development or anything like that.

Good luck.
