i'm 24 years old and i'm a recovered heroin addict. about 2 years ago when i began use of it my period stoped. i lost a lot of weight due to my habit. i've been clean for almost 90 days and i'm worried i really messed up my hormons. i'm curently on methadone and i don't know if that would effect my period from coming back. i keep getting hot flashes and i know that's a sign of mentapause. i'm really worried i'll never get my period back. i don't know what to  think about it...

A. You are too soon after all the changes to know what is going to happen to your periods. Most likely you are not in menopause and you didn’t mess things up. There is probably a good chance that once your body gets more protein and nutrition and you are clean a little longer things will improve even more.

However, cycle length often stays irregular on methadone, about half the time. About 11% continue not to have periods. Don’t worry about your periods on Methadone.  Even if they are abnormal, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to have a baby.  If you stay clean, there is a good chance that fertility drugs can help you to get pregnant when the time comes. In the meantime, use a condom so you don’t have to worry about getting an STD which can also affect your fertility, or getting pregnant when you think you can’t.

thank you very much for answering me so soon. this is what i needed to hear. i'm going through a lot of emotions now that i didn't let my self deal with before. when people abuse a substance it's supprising how you really lose sight of the importance of taking care of your self. i'm trying hard to make the right choices in helping my body heal, but sometimes i get overwelmed with guilt of doing that to my self in the first place. thank you for your advice and compassion. it means so much to me!!!!
