depression

i am 18 yrs old and  i live in durham, england. i have been feeling consistently unhappy for the past four years, during which time i have injured my self on a regular basis (cutting my left arm with a razor/knife. i thought i was over the worst but recently i have been feeling just as bad as before and my si has become more impulsive and worse in terms of the injuries caused. Also i feel permanently fatigued and have problems concentrating for more than a few minutes. paradoxically my personal life is at a better point now that any time before, i have recently entered into a stable, loving relationship, my family are well and i am coping adequetly with my course. the idea of seeking medical help of any kind is distressing to me but my injuries are causing my girlfriend to be concerned. should i seek help or wait to see if i feel better in a few months? how should i go about seeking help?

Lee,

You report depression and self mutilation which may represent borderline personality disorder in addition to a mood disorder.  I suggest that you seek treatment with a psychiatrist as soon as possible to discuss these issues further.  In genral these types of problems can have longterm effects due to their chronic nature.  Your primary care physician may assist you with a referal.
