Throbbing pressure in head upon standing and walking

I am a 38 yr old female.  About a year ago I started to experience a very strange feeling that occurs periodically when I move from a sitting to a standing position and start to walk.  The sensation is as if my head and neck are throbbing with pressure and I have to stop walking or slow down and stop and stand still for a minute or so to make the sensation stop.  Sounds are muffled in rhythm with the pulsations and I sometimes feel as if I will pass out, but never have.  There is no pain.

I have been checked throughly by my GP, a cardiologist, and an electrophysiologist  and none of them could find a cause.  It does seem to happen sometimes when I am hungry and have missed a meal or eaten later than usual.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time.

Equally have this problem, after a lot of research and effort to figure out the cause I have a possible reason.

A lot of the responses I've read (and that's most of them) include computer workers, getting out of cars after a long journey or seated for a period of time.

This could conclude it's a postural issue, upper crossed syndrome, forward head posture etc.  The neck and upper traps are always tight and forward thus pushing the head further forward than it should be which is causing more weight for your neck to hold and additional strain. This strain and tension in the neck is released once you stand upright which is when you feel the pulsation. Similar to if you exercise at the gym with weights after the set has ended you can feel the muscle tension release or pulsate due to the strain you've just put it through.

It might be worth going to a physio or speaking to a chiropractor on this, or performing exercises to strengthen the muscles that will help your posture and prevent this.

This is just my idea and not medical advice but worth looking into further.

Hope everyone finds a solution to it, and if so reply so we can all get some relief!

I have the exact same symptoms as the original poster. Curious to know if anyone has received a diagnosis? My MDs have ruled out POTS, IIH, migraine, and others.

CSF leak...
Or Benzodiazepine Withdrawal/Tolerance

Common with those who have spinal epidurals, or extreme trauma to the spine. Unfortunately the test to get it would need a CT myelogram.  It takes some serious pushing a doctor to get that test.

As for Xanax withdrawal or other benzodiazepine, it can give you many crazy symptoms that sounds like every issue in the world.

I have suffered from these symptoms also for about the past 2 years. I am 58 yr old female, weigh 343lbs, 5' 5". My diabetes and hypertension have been under control with meds for 10 yrs. I was recently diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and will be worked up to wear a sleep apnea mask at night soon. I know my weight is an issue but OSA can also affect people with normal body weight. You can ask your doctor for a sleep study, my insurance requires it be ordered by a pulmonologist (a lung Dr). Maybe OSA is related to these symptoms.......

I get this too. It is way worse now that I take Propranolol for migraine prevention.  Propranolol lowers blood pressure and slows heartrate.  Thus when I get up quickly after sitting for awhile, the blood that's been pooling in my legs doesn't get up to the brain fast enough, causing those horrible but temporary symptoms.  Its called orthostatic hypotension.  If your symptoms last longer and you have a sustained rapid heart rate, it may be POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia).  My 13yr old daughter has POTS. Compression garments on the lower body and eating more salt help her.  Hot showers make her worse.  Mine is plain old orthostatic hypotension... Not drinking enough fluids makes it worse, and I have to just get up slowly sometimes.

I have the same symptoms except for the arm pain. I did have, in addition, dizziness and extreme muscle fatigue and weakness. I was referred to a cardio guy that is well versed in POTS, a little known syndrome. POTS is an umbrella syndrome that covers manynroot causes one of which is dysautonomia. Vanderbilt U. has an entire department that specializes in this syndrome. Check out POTS at nih.gov and mayo.com.

I have the same thing along with a ton of other symptoms. I have had every imaginable test that could be done and have gotten no answers until I saw an Upper Cervical Precision Chiropractor. He took Precision X-rays and told me that my cervical spine is severly out of alignment and is putting pressure on my brain stem and nerves and arteries around it. When he adjusted me I had relief for about two hours and then they came back. I have ligament damage in my neck and also arthritis, so I know it will take a while to hold the adjustment, but I am confident that this will help me because no one else has. I have seen 3 neurologists, 2 ENTs, had my heart checked twice, MRI of brain, among other things. Please please look up Upper Cervical Precision Chiropractic, it is soooo much different than regular chiropractic and it benefits so many people.

For the last several weeks my 63 year old mother has been having these sensations: blocked ears and whooshing sounds (usually when getting up out of the car) and blocked or full ear sensations when lying down or tying her shoes. She is also quite overweight. She doesn't have any diagnosed heart problems, has low blood pressure if anything, and doesn't smoke, yet I still fear a possibly stroke. Am I worrying for nothing?

She is working on turning her diet around and getting consistent exercise. She's already lost a few pounds, but I hope it's not too late.

I have just come from my Dr this afternoon. My symptoms are an instant band of pain around the back of my head and my hearing is affected at the same time. I can only describe the hearing as if my hearing is being switched off and on to the rythym of my heartbeat. It only lasts for a few minutes and everything is back to normal. The doctor said she didn't have a clue what it was and I left the surgery no wiser.

I have the same symptoms. Whooshing, throbbing pressure in my ears when standing up after sitting for a while. One thing I noticed in my case is that if I have a full bladder it is much worse. I drink a lot of water during the day and when I get up from my desk, if I need to "go", the pressure in my head is more intense and sometimes accompanied by vertigo. It usually passes in a minute or so, but it is very disconcerting.

Sorry if that is TMI. But it is definitely a pattern I have noticed. I wish someone had an answer. My doctor just kind of ignores it when I mention it. Blames it on my blood pressure. But I have checked my BP immediately when it happens at home and it is totally normal (normal for me). Not too high, not too low.

I just left hospital from having an MRI for this very thing. Its been going on for several years...throbbing pressure in head when going from sitting to standing, extreme dizziness, headache.....used to get better after eating but has gotten progressively worse. Mentioned it every time I had a drs appt but he just passed over it. Im sure the MRI will not show anything and once again I will think Im just crazy.  Irs such a relief to find out others have this exact problem. If I actually get a diagnosis, I will share.

Had it happen to me today,  went to the ER because it only got worse.  My O2 saturation levels were 30 when i got there, additional testing ruled out heart attack. My heart rate and pulse was elevated. I have restricted breathing due to intense seasonal allergies from mountain cedar pollen. I was given a nitro patch for angina, Ativan to lower BP and HR, steroids (IV & Inhalation) for restricted airways, potassium for hypokalemia, and something for vertigo. I was given a prescription for antibiotics for bronchitis and steroids for various allergens. Even after all that, it still continues with symptoms of asthma. I will make an appointment with my Primary Care Physician for further diagnosis then let you all known what i find out. ***@****

I have this condition for about 10 years on and off.
I work in front of computers sometimes many hours a day and had problems with my neck.
I had b12 deficiency.
I have Hashimoto.
The most common is that when I get out of my car after a minute or twoI  would start hearing the pounding in my ears , I would feel pressure on my head , my right leg would get numb and I would start feeling a strong headache in the inside of my head. After 2-4 minutes it would pass, in rare cases it would develop into a Migraine that day.
This usually happens once per day when it happens.
I have hashimoto, usually my thyroid is stable but when it is not stable the symptoms would get worse.
When I am sick the symptoms got worse
What I found out is that when I had anti fungal treatment versus candida the symptoms would lessen and sometimes disappear completly for month even if the candida came back.(I used lamicil and flucanzol)
Lately afer a few months without any incident I suddenly started getting these attacks in mass.
When I tried to understand what has changed , I remembered that I started in the last four month to eat fish at least once every two weeks(usually I eat none) so I started avoiding any kind of seafood and the attacks are starting  to lessen considerably (month and a half without any kind of seafood)
What I know is the iodine in fish irritates the thyroid even thou in tests the thyroid results were stable.
I also read the sympthoms of mercury poisoning (there is some mercury in fish)  and I had four of them , I didn't consume enough fish to suffer from it but maybe I am more sensitive to it.
The reason most of you can't find a cure is that to understand and identify the problem you need a team of doctors to identify the root causes. You need orthopedist(for neck and spine) , internal medicine, (dermatologist  and gastrologist for candida) , neurologist and naturopath and you need them to work together to make sense of all the sympthoms and understand the root cause, but the chances for that  are slim to none.
So my advise is check if you havbe any kind of thyrods problem (check of antigens) even if it's stable.
Check for candida in specialized labs.
Check if you suffer from any kind of metal poisoning
Check your b12
I am not sure if I found the root cause but I found the some of the links in the vicious cycle and broke them, So I am getting better.
Hope that helps

Wow, a definite correlation to my symptoms and diet. I will definitely look into this as a cause.  Thanks!

I have been experiencing the same symptoms, only it is rising from a low position (car seat or my recliner.)
I spoke with my family doctor today and he thinks it may be spine related.  I also have arthritis of my tail bone from a long ago fracture.
I am being referred to a physical therapist.  Has anyone gone this route?
Sorry, I am just reading this and see most of these posts are quite old.

Jzmatt. I have these symptoms and arthritis in my neck. I have a feeling it's related. Haven't got a conclusion yet. Been treating it as intracranial hypertension.

I had the symptoms of throbbing head upon standing that would last 2-3 minutes before subsiding. I've been using 40mg of lasix for 6 years now with very few reoccurring symptoms

You may have a tumor on your brain. I would go to the doctor as soon as possible if you haven't had this problem resolved yet.
