twitching during the nite

we notice our kids will twitch sometimes during the night.  especially the morning before they awake.  i know this can happen during falling asleep, but is this normal during other times of the night.  when their breathing is relaxed and they seem in a deep sleep, i do not recall any twitches.  but when they are about to wake up (say an hour or less) they seem to get randome twitches (hand, foot, etc.)  no real big body jerks.  i notice their breathing is shallower and they seem easy to wake up during these twitches.  any insight would be great!!!

Sort of metabolic disorder, maybe. Similar to magnesium or calcium distribution problems (ion-channel malfunction).

S.B.:  ok, what is an ion-channel malfunction or what you mentioned?  i have since found that this can occur in people during stages of sleep and it is normally ok.  i hope you respond to this.  thanks!
