Post Radical Hyst, Concerned Over CT Scan and MRI Report...High WBCC

by celine149, Oct 16, 2006 12:00AM
Thank you for taking my questions.

I am an 11 yr. cervical cancer survivor. I had stage 1b cancer. I was treated with radical hyst with all pelvic nodes and both ovaries removed. I was started on a climara patch the day following surgery. My Onc/GYN has since retired. For the last 5 years my PCP had been watching an increasing WBCC. It started in the 13. range and is now in the low 20s. The last was 22.6. I was sent to an onc. who did a bone marrow aspiration and also a ct scam of abdomen and pelvis. the ct scan showed a 3x3.5 soft tissue mass that they said "Most likely represented an ovary"....That couldn't be.

We sent for all my surgical and path reports from prior cancer and rad hyst. L and R ovaries were excised and sent to pathology.

Last week I had an MRI with and without contrast of my pelvis. It confirmed the ctscan of verifying a soft tissue mass with fluid signal within in the area of the R. ovary. I am now being sent to a GYN/ONC for further testing..

What does this mean? I am 54 and very confused. Can this be a recurrence this long after treatment? My Bone marrow showed a very slow progressing leukemia (CLL) and my Doc. says I will not need treatment for maybe 5-10 years or even longer. Our plan is every 3 month blood work and every 6 month exam by him. But this pelvis mass is separate from all that.

Can you give me some suggestions or advise?

Thank you so much for your time.

Dear Celine,

It sounds like you have had a very good work up. You need a biopsy of that mass. It could represent a spot of your CLL. It could represent an abscess or a new malignancy. Rarely, it is possible to see cancer cells from a cervical cancer return after 11 years.

Depending on what the biopsy shows, a decision will be made about whether this should be left alone, surgically resected, or treated with radiation and chemotherapy.

take care. Please give us a follow up.

I don't know if this makes any difference or not, but the MRI says, this is a "heterogeneous" soft tissue mass.

Thank you for your answer. The only thing I could think about was a recurrence. I'm thankful you have given me some other possibilities. I will report back when I have more answers.
